Brokenpaw sat along the edge of the Fireclan camp. His emrald eyes followed the other cats, figuring out their routines, their practices. If he was to ever fit in, he had to learn the life of a clan-cat, and quickly.
clan... he rolled the word around his mind. so much better than band, or group, or those other things the cats around Twolegplace called themselves. Why had he stayed on those stinking streets so long, anyway?
the answer rolled over his stomach with a wave of dread. His sister, Night. he wondered a moment where she was, or if she had possibly gone back to twolegplace. was it really a good idea to leave her like that? alone?
stop that! he ordered himself, shaking his head to clear it. the past was the past, and there was nothing he or anyone else could do to change that. Brokenpaw resumed watcheing the rest of the clan scurry about, hoping silently that someone, anyone would talk to him, if only to distract him from the thoughts that lingered like a thick fog at the edge of his mind.

Flamingspout padded out of the Warrior's Den, squinting her eyes against the sunlight. A few cats seemed to be milling around camp, nothing too interesting. Stretching, she gave her long fur a shake, ridding it of the moss it had collected during her nap.
As she scanned the clearing for something to do, a low growl rumbled from her stomach. Puffing out her chest, she pranced over to the fresh-kill pile, making sure that her fur covered the cut she had gotten from an Earthclan warrior a few sunrises ago. It was dreadfully embarrassing to have others stare at it.
The fresh kill pile was lacking the plump fullness that Greenleaf had caused, and it was quite small. Picking out a vole, she began to pad over to patch of moss, when an apprentice caught her eye. "Haven't seen you around." She mewed, curtly.

Brokenpaw looked up at the unfarmiliar warrior, holding back an instinctual hiss. You're in a clan now! no-one's going to attack you! he had to remind himself. at least, i don't think they will... "yeah, I'm new here." he mewed, giving his muscled shoulder a lick to appear bored, while in truth he was just happy someone had noticed him. "name's Broken... i mean, Brokenpaw." he was irritated at himself for accidentially using his rouge name. what was with him? "and yours?"

Flamingspout raised her eyebrows critically. New here, huh? She didn't press the matter, though. She didn't want it to seem like she cared.
When the young tom told her his name, she assumed he had been a loner, the way he had said Broken first. She sniffed distastefully. "I'm Flamingspout." She replyed, narrowing her eyes. You could never be too careful with apprentices. Tell them anything personal and they'd spit it out anywhere. Of course, she would do the same, but that was beside the point.
OOC- Does Brokenpaw have a mentor? *Hint Hint!*

"cool name," Brokenpaw said, careful to sound nonchalaunt. He wndered for a second what his future warrior name would be. he ran a few options through his mind, but none of them were too appealing at the moment. oh well, he had plenty of time to figure that out later.
(OOC: no mentor... yet^^ *hint hint* i was actually just about to ask you ^^)

OOC- Cool! I guess it's settled then...?
IC- Flamingspout frowned. It was an unusual comment that he probably didn't mean, but a compliment never the less. She dipped her head in acknowledgement. "Mmm. Perhaps you will get a fine name too. If you train well and work hard." She mewed, making her face obtain a wise expression.

Brokenpaw's wall of nonchalaunce cracked for a moment, allowing a smile to slip loose. He realized that it was the first time he had smiled, really smiled, in moons. His mind reminded him that he had just broken his rule of pretending not to care, but he didn't correct himself. "I'll do my best, then." he replied with a nod. His eyes wandered to the rest of the camp, and his smile faded into a mix of confusion and un-sureness. "Is there anything I can do to help around the camp as an..." he took a second to remember the word. oh yeah! "Apprentice? I don't want to be a waste of kill, but no-one has told me what needs to be done." He ducked his head sheepishly, his face heating with embarrasment. Way to go, you just admitted you have no idea what to do. He scolded himself internally.
(ooc: yay! Brokenpaw has a mentor! *hugs*)

OOC- *Hugs back* Yippers!
IC- Flamingspout was startled by the apprentice's smile- she hadn't been expecting that. She smirked as he looked around camp. There were many things he could do! The confused expression on his maw made her glad. She would explain it all to him- thoroughly.
"Well, lets see now." She mewed, a shrewd gleam in her eyes. "You could bring some prey to the nursery, clean out the nursery or the elders den, check the elders for fleas, or bring the elders prey." She glanced at Brokenpaw, wondering how he was taking this in.
"But you're very lucky, as you won't have to do any of those things at the moment. I'm going to show you around the territory. We might as well start your training."

Brokenpaw resisted another smile. He had to keep up his hard-earned attitude of nonchalance and toughness. of course, he currently had no reputation in the clan yet, but he was hoping to rebuild his previous one in time. But to explore the territory, to finally see the place he would call his home... his black tail twitched with anticipation.
"Cool." he nodded at his mentor, emrald eyes shining. "where do we start?"

Flamingspout tilted her head. This cat seemed to be trying to obtain an air of fierceness. It was strange for one so young. She smiled to herself as some apprentice-ness came into his eyes again. Well, at least he seems eager. Not all sulky like some cats these days...
"Follow me." She said, before briskly turning away and prancing out of camp, her long-furred tail held high.

Brokenpaw leaptafter his mentor, staying on her flank.
Finally, i get to learn something! I wonder if i'll get to practice fighting, I'm good at that! the glorious scent of prey wafted past him. Or maybe i'll learn hunting. It's not too different from fighting, right? He allowed another secret smile to cross his muzzle. Finally, after all those moons of hoping, he was going to begin training to be a Warrior.

Flamingspout glanced behind her, to see where Brokenpaw was at. To her surprise, he was at her flank, keeping pace with her brisk strides. Nodding in taut approval, she came to a halt at the base of a tall tree with flaming red leaves. "This is the Flame Tree." she mewed, sniffing the air delicately. Now, what do you smell?"

(ooc: ugh! i hate it when it deletes my good posts...)
Brokenpaw paused, opening his jaws slightly to let the nearby scents sort themselves out. He used to do this before digging through heaps of Twoleg rubbish, to find the best scraps. he had become quite good at it, and he had to be, to keep him and Ni... him fed.
He scented the musky aroma of feathers directly above them. he frowned, trying to put a name to the creature he scented. but the forest prey was still new to him, so he did his best to describe it.
"there's some sort of bird in the branch overhead. it's a small one, rather skinny i think." he paused, moving to the next-closest scent.
There was something warm and tempting hiding beneath a leaf to his right. he suppressed the hunger it brought enough to pick out specific tones to the scent. fur. dirt. some sort of berry it was nibbling on. the dry musk of the leaf.
"and a rodent, a mouse or a vole maybe, eating a berry under that leaf over there," he motioned with his paw, then looked at his mentor. "right?"

Flamingspout tasted the air, frowning slightly. ".... Yes. A swallow, I believe." She mewed, nodding solemnly. She could scent the bird's scrawniness, and she wrinkled her nose. Leaf-bare is taking it's path... She thought, half listening to Brokenpaw. "It's a mouse, to be exact. And it's certainly eating something." The sickly sweet scent of berries filled her nostrils as she turned towards the small, furry creature.
"What do you know about hunting?" She inquired, narrowing her eyes. Since he had apparently been a rouge, she didn't know what level he was at.
OOC- I HATE that!!!!

"a little bit. i used to catch the occasional rat when i could find one, but they wouldn't notice if you stepped on their tail." He remembered that he actually had stepped on a rat's tail once. it had been too busy nibbling on a piece of trash to notice. "but i do know how to stay silent. I needed to practice that a lot," Learning to be silent hadn't come easy, especially with his bulky frame. but he had to be able to menuver through the alleyways without other rouges detecting him.
his eyes wandered to the leaf that the mouse was under, his claws coming out to knead at the ground.
"Should I go after it?" he asked his mentor, looking at her for her responce.

Flamingspout nodded slowly as her apprentice spoke. "Hmm, I see..." She mewed, looking him up and down. She was interested to know what he could do. Not much, from the sound of it, but he might just be the modest type. "...Alright then." She mewed, nodding curtly. "Have a go at it." Not that I'm expecting much...
Her gaze turned again to the mouse. They were upwind from it, so that would explain why it hadn't run away. Shrugging, she turned back to Brokenpaw, observing him carefully. She hadn't given him much of a challenge, but she never over-estimated anyone. In her mind, you were either average or below average. Excluding her, of course.

Brokenpaw fell into a almost-gracefull-but-not-quite crouch, taking a second to make sure the mouse was upwind. silently, he made his way towards it.
all the while, he was thinking of how he could actually get to the mouse. the leaf, although helpful in consealing him from the mouse, was also in the way of his kill.
a leaf crunched beneath his paw. he could hear the mouse pause, seconds from bolting. it was now or never.
Brokenpaw pounced, trapping either end of the leaf beneath his large paws, trapping the mouse. the terrified creature squirmed beneath the leaf, squeaking in fear. Brokenpaw thrust his fangs into the leaf, hitting the mouse below. he heared a satisfying crack as the warm creature went limp, and he pulled his face away. unfourtonately, the leaf came with him, stuck to his fangs. his pelt heating in embarrasment, he shook off the clinging leaf and took a look at his prey. it wasn't the cleanest kill, but at least he caught it.
(OOC: poor Brokenpaw, i seem intent on humiliating him...)

OOC- Lol, well, Flamingspout kinda invaded your mind with her thoughts in my last post...
Flamingspout snorted with distaste as Brokenpaw crouched. She could tell that he was going to step on at least one leaf. Wincing as he did so, she tensed, expecting the mouse to spring away. But instead, her apprentice had managed to trap it under a leaf.
What one might call clumsy luck.
Well, it wasn't especially impressive, but interesting to watch never the less. She flexed her claws experimentally before striding briskly over to the young tom's side.
"At least you caught it." She commented, her mew dry with sarcasm. " First of all, you need to work on your crouch." The red spotted she-cat demonstrated, slinking silently over the ground. "Take it slowly, and tread lightly. Look where you're putting your paws. Try to avoid stepping on leaves or twigs, and if you must do so, remember to shift your body weight to your other legs. Also, you should get as close as possible to your target as you can before pouncing. That way you can avoid landing on leaves instead of a mouse."

Brokenpaw studied Flamingspout's example thuroughly, then dropped into one to mirror hers, listening intently to her instruction. behind Brokenpaw's mask of boredom and disintrest, he had only one goal in life: to be the best or work untill he was.
Keeping everything his mentor had said in the forefront of his mind, he crept a few steps forward, not stepping on a single leaf or twig. after moving a few cat-lengths forward, he looked back over hiis shoulder at flamingspout. "like that?"

Flamingspout watched her apprentice mirror her.
He's pretty good, once you tell him how to do it, I suppose.
"That's decent, but lower your rump, and remember to keep your tail still." These were small problems that probably wouldn't effect whether he caught something or not, but she was very picky when it came to hunting.
