Dawnflight padded gingerly across the soggy ground, trying not to flinch at the wetness that seeped up through her bellyfur. Her bright eyes made a quick sweep of the area, and she came to a gentle stop; there was something she was looking for before the ground became too marshy.
After a moment of searching, she found what she was looking for. "Aha! Cherrypaw, come here for a moment."
The white Medicine Cat flicked her tail as she scurried across the ground, making a beeline for a little patch of brush. Undeterred by the wet leaves and briers that stood in her way, she pushed her head through, only to emerge a few seconds later with a small clump of bright blue flowers clamped in her jaws. Their scent, a bit like honey, flooded her nose, and she placed them on the ground in front of her, looking pleased.

"what herb is that?" Cherrypaw asked, breathing in the scent so she wouldnt forget. her paws squished in the wetlands as she padded towards her mentor.

"Borage." Dawnflight replied, nosing one of the stalks toward Cherrypaw. "But sometimes they're also called "Star-flowers". See why...?" The white Medicine Cat nosed the bright blue petals, which were arranged in the shape of a five-pointed star. "They're also sometimes pink or white, but that's the easiest way to find them. When they aren't flowering, you can identify borage by all of these little hairs along it's leaves." "Its leaves are good for treating a fever, but we usually give them to queens to help their milk." Blinking and nodding her head, she gathered the herbs together in a little bundle with her paw, and then bent to grasp them gently between her teeth. "Let's keep going now. " thier really pretty! ill keep an eye out for them, but what else grows here?" Cherrypaw looked at the flowers, thinking the white ones must look like the stars of silverpelt. she looked up at the sky, but it was clouded over. she padded after Dawnflight, her wet paws feeling cold and muddy.
OOC: cool! actual picture of the herb, almost like im really a medicine cat apprentice!

"Indeed they are." Dawnflight purred through the mouthful of borage, her blue eyes warm. Her gaze kept flicking toward the ground, which was becoming softer and more waterlogged with every step. In the distance, her snowy ears could hear the gentle sound of rushing water. Almost immediately, the Medicine Cat changed direction, padding toward the noise and motioning with her tail for Cherrypaw to follow. "Well, let's see." The white-she cat thought for a moment, leaping lightly onto a fallen log and staring out across the marsh. "Watermint, of course, and Mallow often grows in places like this where the ground is wet. It's best to gather around sunhigh, when it's had a chance to dry out a bit. Horsetail would grow around here too--their leaves are good for infected wounds." OOC: Yep! I did some research on the different herbs Medicine Cats use before I created Dawnflight, because I had no idea what some of them were before.  |

" so should we look for Watermint and Mallow? Doesnt horsetail grow more in the water than of soggy ground?" Cherrypaw wondered, thinking that if she was ever going to remember these herbs that she had to learn it on the first try. she heard the roar of water and was very excieted! Cherrypaw loved to swim.

"Some types of horsetail do... Hmm..." Dawnflight's ears flicked toward Cherrypaw as she carefully navigated a rather large pool of muddy water. "We really need watermint, but if you can find some mallow, then that'll be appreciated as well." The white she-cat took a moment to blink approvingly at her apprentice... but was abruptly cut off when she advertantly stumbled into a puddle. Gasping when the cold water splashed against her, she reared back, but luckily it wasn't deep enough to do any damage to either her or the herbs she held. Stepping again onto dry land, she couldn't help but chuckle to herself. "Oops! Ah well, no harm done." Dawnflight purred, winking at Cherrypaw good-naturedly as she finally emerged from the brush and stepped paw on the bank of a small stream. "Anyway, watermint will be close to the water. It'll look like a little cluster of pink-ish flowers, with a few sets of small, thin leaves. Mallow will be on a bit more dryer ground; it's a white flower with larger, pointed leaves." The Medicine Cat pointed her tail at a tiny cluster of white petals a few tail-lengths from the bank, and began to pad carefully towarn them. "Be careful around the water though; the ground is much softer here." OOC: the watermint and mallow pics are the same ones. but the watermint looks cool!
IC: Cherrypaw followed her mentor looking around for the herbs she had decribed. she padded a little too close to the steam and slipped on some moss growing next to the bank. Cherrypaw splashed into the stream, stood up but her paws slipped on some algae covered stones and she fell into the water again! She finally recovered her balance and clawed her way up the bank. when she padded back over to her mentor, now soaked, she noticed a tall stemmed plant near where she fell in. " Dawnflight, i think i found the horsetail! look over there, the plant with some slightly flattened stalks" she felt her fur prickle, slightly guilty. " and if im correct theres the watermint over there. and arent you standing next to the mallow?" Cherrypaw was pleased that she could spot the herbs so well. She would never have thought that she would have been able to identify them so well
OOC: yes she fell in the water because the ground was softer there, just like your cat said. =^..^=

OOC: It's been edited. Thanks for pointing that out! IC: Dawnflight watched, her blue eyes round with alarm as her apprentice took a tumble into the stream. She rose to her paws, ready to help Cherrypaw if she had to, but the Medicine immediately relaxed when the golden-brown she-cat placed paws on dry land again. "Apprentices..." The white cat heaved a sigh, amusement and an "I told ya so," expression twinkling in her eyes as she looked Cherrypaw over. Any other time, Dawnflight would be worried that the young cat might catch a chill, but it was greenleaf, and a hot one at that. That, and they were WaterClan cats, after all. "...But I suppose I'm no better." The white Medicine Cat demonstrated that fact by giving her own soaked fur a rough lick, and then purred back at her apprentice. "Yes, that's right! Good job, Cherrypaw!" |

"how much should we get?" she wodered at hjow much of the herbs they should keep in stock. " and where do we find catmint?" Cherrypaw was very eager to get catmint, the plant was so delicious.

OOC: That's okay. IC: Dawnflight purred, nudging the pile of borage with her paw before she rose to her feet. "Well, there's plenty of herbs around here, so why don't you go grab a few good clumps of mallow. I think I'll get the watermint." The she-cat winked playfully at Cherrypaw, continuing as she padded toward the spot where her apprentice had fallen. "And as for the catmint--" the WaterClan Medicine Cat mrrwed to herself at the younger cat's enthusiasm, "--it's best found near Twoleg dens. Doesn't normally grow all that well in the wild, so we'd have quite a ways to walk to find some." Grunting and scrabbling to keep a pawhold--she hadn't been born a swimmer--Dawnflight carefully began to wade through the stream, picking clumps of watermint as she went. "Normally, I stock up on it in newleaf and greenleaf and let it dry for leafbare, although it's best fresh." |

OOC: sorry it took me so long to post! =^..^=
IC: "alright, the mallow then!!" she was very happy to be learning so much. if she had known how much there was to learn then she would have begged the leader of Waterclan to make her an apprentice early so she could start learning earlier! ' i wonder if we will get juniper berries next or something else? i dont remember anything other than that.' she thought, hoping to learn more, now. Cherrypaw was very eager, and so she bounded over to the clumps of mallow, ready to grab as much as she could. but she slipped on the boggy ground and fell. "ouch!" she cried out in pain as her front leg sent shocking pain all throughout her nerves. it felt like it was on fire, and hurt badly. " Dawnflight! it hurts!" she meowled to her mentor.
OOC: its not permanent or anything. no lasting anything. =^..^=

OOC: That's okay! IC: Dawnflight's head snapped to attention at her apprentice's shout, and she immediately made for the bank as quickly as she dared. Sopping wet from the hip down, the white she-cat dropped the bundles of watermint and darted to Cherrypaw's side. "Let me see," she said gently as she lightly nosed the younger cat onto her good side. "Where does it hurt worst?" |

" it hurts at the part where my paw is connected to the rest of my leg!" she felt oddly calm now, the pain making her senses sharp. she felt her tail brushing against the grass and her mentor by her. " how do you treat something like this?" she asked, slightly curious. =^..^=

"Hmm, the joint then." As Dawnflight gently sniffed the affected area, she could detect no cuts or other open wounds. Every once in a while, her blue eyes would flick up to meet Cherrypaw's, watching for signs of distress or further pain. The she-cat was mildly surprised, but pleased, at how calm her apprentice had become. Being able to remain level-headed during injuries was essential to becoming a good Medicine Cat.
"You've sprained it." Dawnflight finally announced as she looked up for the last time. She couldn't help but smile at Cherrypaw's curiosity. There was always time for a lesson, it seemed. "The first thing you do for an injury like this is to get the cat's weight off of the limb."
Grinning, she poked at Cherrypaw playfully. "I think we've got that part taken care of.
"Next, you check to make sure that there are no open wounds--like I just finished doing. And after that--" The white cat rose to her paws, "--you keep an eye on the sprain and apply nettle leaves to make sure it doesn't swell too badly, and give the cat one or two poppy seeds to help the pain."
Dawnflight paused and smirked at Cherrypaw with a twinkle of dry humor in her eyes. The apprentice probably wouldn't like the final bit. "The cat in question also needs at least a day of rest, depending on how bad it is, to give the injury a chance to heal while having as little pressure put on it as possible. Which means we need to get you back to camp."

" oh, cant i stay out here?" she whined. " i dont want to go back to camp!" she looked at the stream and the herbs beside her. " cant i stay and help collect herbs?" then she had a thought. " or back at camp, could you show me some of the herbs you have there?" she was very dissapointed but thought that maybe she could still learn back at the camp. she couldnt wait to learn more.

Dawnflight purred with amusement. Sometimes apprentices could be so predictable...
"No, you can't stay out here." She told Cherrypaw gently, "We've found most of the herbs anyway."
Thinking for a moment about the apprentice's last question, the white Medicine Cat eventually nodded. "Sure, I'll show you around the Medicine Cat's den when we get back."
Smiling brightly at the younger she-cat, Dawnflight carefully gathered together the borage and mallow they'd found, nosing the watermint toward Cherrypaw.
"Awright," Talking was a bit difficult through her mouthful of herbs. "You can cawwy those, but keep your weight awf your pahw." Managing to send her apprentice a grin, the white cat turned, but didn't start off yet, instead waiting for Cherrypaw.

Cherrypaw pushed herself up onto her paws, holding her injured leg above the ground. she bent down and grabbed her bundle of herbs in her mouth. she started towards her mentor, happy that she would still have a chance to learn back at camp, but cursing her clumsiness in this instance.

Twitching her tail, Dawnflight started off as well. She padded a little ways ahead, picking out the driest, levelest paths to take and clearing away brambles and sticks as best she could. Every once in a while she'd point out roots or stones for Cherrypaw to avoid.
"Don't worry," she called over her shoulder (and nearly dropping her herbs in the process), knowing that Cherrypaw must be disappointed, "We'll go out again soon."
Grinning back at her apprentice, her eyes sparkled good-naturedly. "Maybe next time we'll take a trip to the Twoleg Place so I can show you where to find catmint."

" great!" Cherrypaw meowed, almost tripping over her own paws as she looked up. " do you get any other herbs from twolegplace?" she wondered at how much you could find in that large smelly place. she went around a large gray rock and over a trailing root. " do they grow other good herbs in their gardens?"
