Everyone always wanted something. This cat wanted love. That cat wanted power. This cat wanted to live another day. Didn't they understand? StarClan can't do everything! In the world of the living, their powers were limited. It was the greatest disappointment she had ever had. Moonrise had figured that once she got to StarClan she's still be able to help her children, walk with them in times of need, talk to them whenever they called to her. But the only power she had was in their dreams and in her star, where she could cause her face to appear at night, but only if called. She had nothing anymore. She couldn't help.
Moonrise dipped her paw in the lake, the place she always came to think. So many dreams, so many prayers. It always made her stop and pause. This was the place where she had the most power. This was where she could step into dreams, appear in stars. It was the only place she could ever feel close to happy again.
Sing me a song, Mommy. Moonrise closed her eyes, breathing in deeply the dreams of her daughter. She saw the little orange kit she used to be. She saw the bright sparkle in her blue eyes. She remembered everything. She remembered that day too. Sing me a song, Mommy. If you sing me a song, I’ll go to bed. Promise.
“Cat’s can’t sing the way you want me to, darling,” Moonrise murmured, stroking the water. “I can yowl for you. You want me to yowl for you?”
No, sing. Sing Mommy. Moonrise smiled. Her daughter had been such a cute kit, always picking up on words that other creatures were saying and wanting to be able to use them in her own world. She had never changed. Moonrise was glad for that.
“That’s not something I can do. Now go to sleep, my little Sunset.” Moonrise stared at the water, smiling at the blankness it now showed. She could ease pain. But she couldn’t be there for real.
