Nightpaw tossed and turned on the frost-covered grass, moaning in her troubled sleep. behind her eyelids, past nightmares attacked her with claws of pain and fangs of memory.
[shadow=purple,left,300]"don't follow me, Night. I can't babysit you forever."
"mama! Mama, where are you?"
"Come closer and you're dead, kit."[/shadow]
with a gasp, she woke, claws gripping the cold earth below her. she took a few moments to realize where she was. face warming in imbarrasment, she released the ground from her grip, looking up at the stars above. there were so many, stretching on eternally in silent dignity. the clan cats said that dead cats hunted among the stars, and Nightpaw believed with all her heart that they did.
knowing she wouldn't get back to sleep, she stood, examining the Skyclan camp. no cat was stirring, save for her. sighing, her eyes wandered to the forrest beyond. the darkness beckoned her to it, offering to hold her in its sheltering arms.

Nightpaw couldn't hold in the urge to run anymore. she bolted off into the darkness, letting her black pelt melt into the night to become one with the shadows. her warm breath was pulled into her face from the speed, warming her muzzle in a way that was pleasant and calming.
the trees flew past her at a dizzying speed, and she knew that soon she would reach some kind of border. for a moment she wondered if she would be able to recognize a border if she found one, but she reasoned that no-cat would be up at this hour to catch her if she made the mistake.
a gleam in the distance encouraged her to move faster, pushing her sleek body to even greater speeds. she only slowed when she was a few tail-lengths from the starry lake.
thoroughly exhausted, Nightpaw collapsed at the water's edge, lapping up the reflected stars thirstily. once she had satisfied her thirst, she stood, taking a few steps out into the chilly water. it was cold, oh, so incredibly cold! but it felt heavenly, lapping against her pitch black fur. she closed her amethyst eyes, soaking up the wonderful cold. she stayed until the fact that she couldn't feel her tail anymore caused her to climb out, shivering on the shore.
an icy breeze blew past, freezing Nightpaw to the core. perhaps the midnight dip had been a bad idea...
"Greetings, little Night" came a familiar voice from beside her, surprisingly close.

"Kitcatcher!" she squeaked, spinning to face the insane cat. "Don't do that! What are you doing here anyway?"
"Me come find you," The crazy loner reasoned, giving his dirt-caked paw a lick, making Nightpaw shudder. "Brother no tell me where little Night go, so I look, and I find now!"
Nightpaw pressed her tail against his maw, trying to quiet the cat. "Yeah, yeah, you found me okay? but this is Skyclan territory. if anyone sees me talking to you..."
"Who's to see?" Kitcatcher said around a mouth-full of tail.
Thinking a moment, Nightpaw sighed in defeat before releasing his maw. "Alright, fine. Why did you want to find me anyway?"
"Kitcatcher checking in on saved ones. see how they do."
Nightpaw had long since forgiven Kitcatcher for taking her and her brother from their twoleg home. She knew he meant only the best. so she put up with his random appearances and check ins. her brother, on the other side, still held a grudge.
Her eyes widened. her brother! "Wait, you said you saw Broken? where? was he okay?" she asked urgently, fearing the answers.
