Ripples lapped at the bank of the lake, pushing up bits of twigs and fallen leaves onto the soggy earth with each tiny wave. It was quiet, the birds silent in the humid air, save the sound of tiny squelching steps made by a gray-brown and blond tabby. She padded along the bank, leaving behind footprints that quickly gurgled and filled with water. A white tipped tail twitched almost lazily in response to her pawsteps' echoes, but Echostep's ears were pricked, and her copper eyes alert, waiting.

A dark tabby tom yawned and opened his eyes. He stared out of the apprentice den and saw that he had overslept on his first day of training. The tom shot out of the den and quickly groomed his pelt before sniffing the air. It seemed his mentor had left the camp and was out in the forest somewhere waiting for him. The tom slowly crept from the camp and followed his mentor's scent and soon found her the lake edge. The tom padded up to his mentor and said, "I'm sorry I overslept Echostep. I promise it won't happen again!" How could he be so lazy? If he wanted to be leader one day then the tom should know to wake with the dawn and be prepared for anything instead of sleeping like a kit all day.

"See that it doesn't." Echostep sniffed shortly, but there was a disarming twinkle in her eyes that gave their copper color a warm, burnished glow. In all truth, she had expected Sparrowpaw to sleep in, at least on his first day, and didn't mind so much. She'd been an apprentice herself once, afterall... And, besides, he was her first apprentice.
Still smirking a bit, the older cat turned toward the younger and flicked her tail toward the land beyond the lake. "This is part of the northern-most border of SkyClan, the Lake of Stars; beyond is the Sandy Lands and the Giant Waters. We normally don't have to worry much about other Clan cats intruding around here, but sometimes we get rogues or loners who pass through." She nodded to herself, before continuing. "We're not going to do a full circuit of the whole territory today, I'm afraid." Not with these tensions... We're blocked on both sides by enemy Clans. "But I promise we will very soon."
Echostep smiled encouragingly at Sparrowpaw, "I want you to know some basic hunting and fighting techniques first though, to at least get an idea of them, okay?" I don't want to put you into danger without giving you the means to protect yourself first.

Sparrowpaw nodded and saw the twinkle in his mentor's eye. The tabby tom knew that he was Echostep's first apprentice and he wanted to make her proud of him. He was a little disappointed when Echostep said they wouldn't tour the whole territory, but then he remembered that two enemy Clans surrounded them and he understood. "So what will we do first? Hunting or fighting?" Sparrowpaw paused and then purred, "If we're surrounded by enemies I think it would do better to start off with some fighting moves first. They wouldn't hunt in our territory to bring us prey, that's for sure." Sparrowpaw wanted to start off with a couple of battle moves so he would be prepared for any battles that may arise from the two enemies on either side of SkyClan. The young apprentice was glad to have such an understanding mentor. He eyed Echostep and knew she would be a good friend for him in the future.

Echostep smiled, nodding. "Fighting it is." Planting her paws, Echostep stared down at her apprentice. "Now, you're still small. You'll grow out of that, obviously, but an enemy cat won't wait. They'll try to use their size as an advantage."
She raised her muzzle and stood at her full height. "The best way to take them by surprise is to leap onto their back and dig in with your claws. You can also knock them off balance--I want you to try it on me... Claws sheathed, please."

Sparrowpaw nodded and leapt at Echostep. His paws managed to jump over Echostep's head. The tabby tom started coming down to land on his mentor's back. His mind wandered for a moment and wondered what his sister was doing. Was she training or sniffing around the territory? Sparrowpaw would give anything to be in his sister's paws at this moment. The tabby tom blinked his eyes and noticed soemthing odd... he was such a mousebrain! He let his mind wander and gave his mentor time to defend herself! Sparrowpaw shook his head and twisted in order try and dodge her counter-attack that he knew was coming.

Echostep easily ducked under Sparrowpaw's leap, twisting around and swatting a paw at her apprentice's side to knock him off balance. The grayish-brown and cream tabby rolled to her feet, squaring off with the younger tabby again.

Sparrowpaw turned and this time aimed for Echostep's left shoulder, but he kept his eyes staring into hers so she wouldn't know where he was aiming at. The tabby tom was enjoying himself and was glad to now be an apprentice. For now he would just enjoy his apprenticeship and trade his knowledge with Spicepaw and see what she learned while she listened to what he learned.

At the last possible moment, Echostep turned and leaned into Sparrowpaw's hit. She let his momentum carry her onto her back; then, the tortie-tabby kicked upwards with her back legs--claws sheathed--ready to launch the apprentice off her.

Sparrowpaw hrrmmpfed to his mentor. He hated being clumsy. He sighed and closed his eyes, but this time he went by scent and hearing alone. He leapt towards where his mentor was last at and extended his paws. He aimed for what he thought was her right shoulder and paw.
