The sandy tan she-cat waited for her mentor anxiously. This was her first day of training and she wanted to please her new mentor. And it was Snowstep! She had wanted Snowstep as her mentor and she had gotten her wish. The little she-cat waited near the fresh-kill pile.

Snowstep bounded into camp from the dawn patrol, her fur misty from the morning dew in the grass. Her white paws were extremely wet, as if she just stepped out of a pile of snow. It was still really early, the sun barely risen, but she spotted her new apprentice waiting for her at the freshkill pile.
"Spicepaw!" she called out to the younger she-cat. "Wow you're really early. Most apprentices need a wakeup call on their first training," she pointed to the apprentice den with her nose, the sound of snoring coming from it.
"So, all ready for your first day of training?"

Spicepaw's eyes glittered with excitment, "Yes Snowstep I am! I want to get a head start on my training. If they want to sleep in then they can miss out on being warriors." Spicepaw purred at her own little joke. She stared at her mentor and said, "What are we going to do today? Practice hunting skills? Learn battle moves? Tour the territory?" Spicepaw wanted to make sure she learned everything she could in order to be ready for her warrior ceremony in the future.
The sandy tan she-cat apprentice knew that was a long way into the future, but she also knew that being prepared for something was a good thing. It meant you wouldn't be caught off guard if anything happened and Spicepaw wanted to make sure that she did her best and please her mentor in the days and moons to come. The young she-cat lowered her voice and whispered, "My brother won't make a good leader one day if he is still snoring away in the apprentices' den." She smiled at her mentor hoping she wouldn't be offended by what she had just said.

Snowstep purred at Spicepaw's excitement, her whiskers twitching in amusement. She was glad that she got such an energetic apprentice. "You're right, that'll just be your brother's loss, won't it?" the light-grey warrior winked, then turned to head out to the territories, flickering her tail for Spicepaw to follow.
"Well, battle moves can wait till later. First, we shall tour the territory like you said, so that you won't ever get lost in your own home." Snowstep smiled and set a quick pace. She was going to work Spicepaw a little before she lets her eat. "First stop, Rolling Hills," she meowed behind her and started running.

Spicepaw raced after her mentor, eyes glittering with excitement and anticipation. Would she do well? Would she please her mentor? Spicepaw knew that the only way to do so was to train hard and do her best. If Spicepaw did that then even Snowstep couldn't say anything bad about her apprentice. The sandy tan she-cat sniffed the air and said, "I smell fox, but I think its stale. It was probably here either last night or yesterday morning. Snowstep do you think the fox is still on our territory or did the warriors drive it off?" The apprentice became anxious and knew that foxes were just as dangerous as badgers, dogs, and Twolegs. Spicepaw hoped that she didn't have to run to any foxes anytime soon.

"Don't worry, Spicepaw, I heard that the patrol yesterday drove off a fox into the rogue lands. And you're right, it has been here recently, good job on scenting it. It won't cause us any trouble today though."
Snowstep was surprised yet proud that her apprentice scented the fox, even though she wondered if Spicepaw had ever seen a fox in her life before.
Soon, she felt the warm winds from the Rolling Hills brush her soft fur as they ran, her legs moving effortlessly under her slim body. When she was an apprentice, she remembered how tough it was to keep up with her fast mentor... Finally, they have arrived.
"We are at the Rolling Hills. This is where speedy prey like rabbits roam. Let's try to catch one, shall we?" She smiled at Spicepaw, sure that the young she-cat was hungry by now, especially after their run.

Spicepaw saw the confusion in her mentor's eyes at the mention of the fox scent and purred. "I snuck out of camp as a kit before. Don't forget a lot of kits do this before their apprentices. I never met a fox, but my mother caught Sparrowpaw, Grieivingpaw, and I wandering the forest and she scented the fox that I had scented and told us what it was. I made sure to remember for later." The sandy tan she-cat paused and said, "You know I think a cat's training begins before they are apprentices because there have been times when kits met predators and enemies that they keep those memories with them for life. My mother said I was lucky to have missed the fox at all. If my brothers and I had met the fox none of us would be here today and Sparrowpaw probably wouldn't fulfill his dream of being leader one day." The apprentice shuddered at the thought of her brother losing out on a wonderful oppertunity.

Snowstep blinked, and nodded at what Spicepaw said. Her apprentice was really really smart, advanced for such a young cat barely out of kit-hood.
"Since you've had so much experience, did you ever catch prey before?" she asked before teaching her how to catch a rabbit, sitting with her tail around her snow-white paws. She thingyed her head and smiled. If Spicepaw really did, that'd be great; this would be an easy apprentice to teach, and she would make a great warrior really quickly.

"I've never caught prey before, but I've seen my mother hunt before. Here let me show you." She crouched down and began silently stalking forward. Luckily Spicepaw wasn't attempting to hunt because she knew that the move was off a little bit. Spicepaw stopped and looked at her mentor and tilted her head. Something clicked when Spicepaw looked at her mentor. That was when she realized that Snowstep might actually be a friend to Spicepaw one day. If so then Spicepaw would do anything to please her mentor now to accept her friendship later. The sandy tan she-cat waited for her mentor to suggest which animal she had caught her mother hunting.

"Hm," Snowstep sat patiently as she watched Spicepaw do a demonstration for her. It was a pretty decent hunter's crouch, she had to admit, though the apprentice had only seen it from her mother before. "That's precicely the crouch we would be using for hunting rabbits here," she purred, drawing a paw over her ear. "It's a silent hunter's move, where the paws barely scrape over the ground, so that the rabbits large ears cannot detect any sound of the approach. Well done, you did a pretty good example. Here, copy me more precicely."
The light-grey warrior quickly bend down into a low and careful croush, then began moving forward, her paws landing so softly on the ground that no sound was audible. "Now you try, though during the hunt for rabbits, you'll need to add more speed, making it harder to stay quiet. Try it slowly first though."

Spicepaw nodded as she saw the correct way. The sandy tan apprentice had brought a memory forward more than couple of moons. Spicepaw blinked her blue-green eyes and crouched down and slowly crept forward. With time the little apprentice knew that she would be faster and better at the crouch and any other type of hunting crouches that were there. The apprentice made it to her mentor's side and stopped. She stared up at her mentor and said, "Like that?" Spicepaw was glad for some hunting moves. Suddenly an idea came to Spicepaw, "Hey Snowstep. Do you think if a battle ever appeared do you think that some of the cats can hunt while others do the fighting so not every cat is exhausted and weakened for a fight?" Spicepaw wanted to lay out a plan because she sensed something from her brother. An anger or something like a fierce thorn of protection. Either way Spicepaw guessed that Sparrowpaw was training in battle moves.

Snowstep sat down again in thought. Hunters and fighter? That didn't sound quite like the way of the clans. But she had to admit it was well thought-through. She didn't know how the clan leader would react to that suggestion though. The mentor's cheerful spirit was changed by the worry of battle. She knew that it would be some day soon... the forest was in such tension that the storm would definetly break out soon...
"That's an interesting idea, Spicepaw," she meowed, her voice clearly sounding worried about their future. She didn't want so much blood shed. And Spicepaw and her brother were only new apprentices; she suddenly became afraid for them. Afraid for what they will experience. Afraid for their survival.

Spicepaw sensed her mentor's anguish and frustration and padded over to her. She purred and gave Snowstep a gentle lick across the ears, "Whatever happens Snowstep, the Clan will be together to fight it. We're all brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers. The warriors care for the queens and the apprentices care for the Elders. The queens provide the Clan with warriors and leaders while others become the medicine cat. In a way its almost like we're a-a... what's it called Snowstep?" The small apprentice had no idea what the word is for a brother, sister, father, and mother.
