Lessons of Dawn

Treestar lay silently in the patch of frost bitten flowers. Thin layer of soft snow covering their beauty. "Amberpaw, I have brought you here to test your stealth." the Earthclan leader meowed without opening his eyes or looking about his surroundings for his apprentice. Only the tom's ears pricked at the she-cat's steps. "Look about you. No trees and little underbrush to hide under. This means you have to find a new way of stealth. Can you find it without my guidance?"

Treestar waited, not expecting Amberpaw to reply. Half hoping she wouldn't. Just because your enemy talked to you, doesn't mean you should to them. Sometimes it could all be only a trick to make you reveal yourself. The Earthclan leader's fluffy light-brown tabby fur fluffed out at the wind as he waited there. Ears pricked and awaiting the slightest noise.

Amberpaw blinked, Okay... she whispered. Looking around for something brightly colored hoping that she could hide her slightly orange pelt..Amberpaw frowned..everything seemed so dead...

Amberpaw walked around softly groaning in the inside; I won't find a place to hide... she thought. A lightbulb ticked on in her head There is always creativity... she imprivised and then walked around quickly gathering everything in reach and dived under it making sure her tail was in, Don't find me... Amberpaw prayed.

ooc- Reminds me of diving under covers as a kid XD

IC: Treestar's ear twitched at the russle of the flowers. His amber eyes quickly snapping open as he whipped his head in that durection. Nothing? Slightly confused, Treestar rose, stepping gingerly with silent paws forward. Sniffing about for the smell of his apprentice. It took a while before his nose finally thrust into a pile of flowers and bumped Amberpaw's. Pulling away, the Earthclan leader gave a chuckle. "Very creative, Amberpaw. If I didn't expect you to be around, my eyes would not have rested on your hiding spot. A passing patrol would miss you easily." Treestar gave clear praise, nodding to show that she had won and could come out. "seeing as you seem to have hidding down pat, why don't you tell me the closest border is? If we are in the flower patch, what is the closest clan. Do you know?"

Amberpaw came out listening to Treestar but when he mentioned borders she froze up Geh!?! Uhh..think Amberpaw... Amberpaw ran through the clans fastly, There is only one way to do this! she announced in her mind, Pick one at random..fastly.. she told herself over and over not wanting to make her mentor upset with waiting.

Umm...uhh is it...Li-Lightningclan? she gave it a shot, Please oh please be right!!!

IC: Treestar nodded, unaware that Amberpaw had simply guessed. "If you think about it, this was a trick question. The flower patch is in the middle of our territory. Both Waterclan AND Lightningclan are equally close from where we are." The leader flicked his tail to each side as he said the clan's name. "Doing great on your first day." Treestar wondered a tad farther from Amberpaw, pausing and turning to her from this new distance.

"From your positon now, attack." the Earthclan leader suddenly called, keeping his flank to her.

Amberpaw blinked, Eh...this is..bad.. then the voice once again ticked around in her mind, Improvise..improvise.. Amberpaw crouched down and started to walk forward but then hugged herself to the ground stopping staring at Treestar with her blue eyes.

I have been lucky so far... Amberpaw thought, Where to attack...Nnn... she was lost in thought staring at Treestar, then her eyes narrowed, He could have attacked me by now! Failure! she scolded herself and then closed her eyes, Just..wing it Amberpaw! and then lunged at Treestar finding herself aiming for his shoulder...

Treestar was slightly disapointed at how long it took. Though it seemed she had noticed that as well judging by her narrowed eyes. Amberpaw lunged for the leader's shoulder. Quickly, the long haired pale tabby ducked and rolled under his apprentice. With quick hind paws, Treestar caught her in mid air. A light brown paw gently tapping her nose. "Good, but you could have run faster. I had time to think." Gaining his footing once more, and placing the young she-cat down, Treestar paused his words. Amber eyes flowing across the frosted flowers to Amberpaw. "It would make a better ambush move then a head-to-head battle starter. Try. . ." Treestar's words slowly trailed off, possibly making his apprentice look at him in question. With a quick moment of silence, the Earthclan leader lunged for Amberpaw with sudden energy. ". . . surprise!"

Amberpaw squeaked and dashed under Treestar and then turned around and jumped onto his back trying to pin him down. Amberpaw surpressed a giggle, it was kinda like playing as a kit..but she had to be serious about this; Amberpaw cleared her head Focus Amberpaw......

Treestar spun rapidly, whipping around and changing durrections sharply. When Amberpaw remained on, the leader praised her in his mind. Then promptly rolled over.

Amberpaw fell off of Treestar, Ouch. she mumbled, and scurried to stand up. She darted under Treestar and curved herself around and bit on his front left leg's ankle gently. She would have bit harder but it was only a training session....

ooc- That was kinda hard to explain D= if you don't get it I will change it..

The Earthclan leader purposly dropped, attempting to pin the apprentice under his wait. Amberpaw is doing well. At this rate, there will be little I need to teach her.

Amberpaw removed her jaw from the ankle and then quickly got out from under Treestar, Did I do okay? she asked worriedly. Most of it was just improvising...she knew for sure that she couldn't do that in a real battle with the other clans...

Amberpaw frowned at the thought, it seemed that a battle might come soon from the tension around the area...

Treestar rose, shaking the snow from his long pale brown tabby pelt. "Good for your first day." the tom hoped Amberpaw wouldn't beat herself up because he didn't use the word 'great'. "There are still a few things I need to teach you. The first can be this; Know when to let go of your opponent. Hanging on for too long leaves you open for other cats to come in and attack. Another; when you aren't attacking, try and always stay moving. Attacks from behind are possible and likely." he paused to run his paw over an ear. "You never know how low a cat will go." Treestar coughed, watching the mist from his breath rise and disappear. For a moment he though the sharp yellow eyes of Foxcloud were in it. The leader shivered, remembering her claws in his back. Poison words hissing into his ear.

Amberpaw blinked when Treestar shivered wondering if something was wrong. She nodded, Okay, I'll remember.. most likely she would forget..Amberpaw shook her head, Got to remember this.. she told herself over and over. Amberpaw looked at Treestar, Are we going to do anything else today?

He thought briefly. "We will focus on battling another day." Pausing, the leader watched a squirrel race from sight. Birds chirped in a hushed tone amoung the trees. "Lets see you hunt." Treestar's amber gaze turned to the she-cat again, tipping his head to the underbrush. "You have a few minutes to get as much prey as you can. Size of the prey is a bonus." The Earthclan leader stopped, allowing Amberpaw to think. The call of a crow broke the long silence.

"Go."

Amberpaw blinked and stood there for a few seconds before she realized that Treestar said to leave. She wailed in her mind and took off quickly. After she gone deep enough into the trees Amberpaw slowed down her chest gave a wave of relief; she felt like just curling up in a ball to relax but now wasn't the time.

Amberpaw sniffed the air smelling the crow that had called earlier, she looked around, Might as well start off with that first Amberpaw looked around trying to find the annoying bird. After a few moments she found a crow in the tree's, Amberpaw frowned, it might not be the same crow but it was something... she frantically went up the tree and landed a branch below where the bird was not daring to breath.

The crow hopped around several times its beady black eyes gleaming. Amberpaw shivered, they looked so evil...plotting. She wiggled slightly knowing the possible danger from doing this but jumped anyway her small claws wrapping around the crows. The crow called in shock trying to fly away but Amberpaw quickly bit its tail feathers dragging it down with her to the lower branch almost falling. When she got down to the lower branch Amberpaw almost fell again, she gasped for air after she killed the crow quickly.

There's one.. Amberpaw muttered trying to ignore her paws that seemed to thump as if they had a heart of their own. Amberpaw took the dead crow and jumped down the tree setting it by the trunk...

-Missing 2 mice 1 squirrel and a rabbit later...-

Amberpaw hung her head miserably, how could she miss all that prey!? She hung her head even more, Treestar wouldn't be happy with only the crow she caught..Her ears flicked when she heard a rustle of leaves, she immediatly looked up seeing a mouse nibbling on a acorn. She gasped and crouched down quickly moving fastly toward the mouse but stopped when a foot away. Her tail swished back and forth as Amberpaw stared at the mouse hungirly. She quickly moved forward and caught it killing it fastly. Amberpaw smiled and buried it so she could get it later..

-A few minutes later-

Amberpaw walked around sniffing occasionally. She wondered if she could find anything else to hunt before she had to go back...Amberpaw froze when a rabbit hopped in front of her, AH! The luck! she said happily in her mind. She bent down but then her eyes narrowed.

She didn't know how to catch rabbit yet...they were so fast..

Amberpaw groaned in her head, but told herself Improvise..

Quietly Treestar waited. His long hair flowing in the occasional gentle breeze. It seemed to be taking a while for Amberpaw to return, though he had to admit the leader did not clearly state how much a 'few' minutes was. Stiffly the Earthclan cat stood, padding silently into the underbrush. Taking a spot in a large bramble, Treestar kept his eyes open for Amberpaw and her possible prey. With any luck, with him changing areas, this will test her sense of smell.

Amberpaw kept her gaze on the rabbit and then put a paw forward and winced fearing that the rabbit would run away; when it didn't Amberpaw slowly let a breath out and continued a few steps and stopped. The rabbit was only inches away...Amberpaw flattened her ears and flexed her claws counting down slowly..

She quickly jumped as the rabbit gone into full alert, Amberpaw gasped and ran after the rabbit that took off Noo! This is what happened last time!! She ran desperatly after the rabbit and tackled it to the ground and began wrestling with it.

Why wouldn't it give up? Amberpaw sank her teeth into the skin as deep as she could until it went limp. She gasped with air, Finally! she said happily, but then frowned. Now she smelled like rabbit; Amberpaw sneezed from the cloud of the dead prey's scent and looked around, Where was Treestar?

The scent of rabbit was strong, just as the distance Amberpaw now is from Treestar was short. The Earthclan leader flicked an ear with slight nervousness. Don't get him wrong, the long haired leader wanted Amberpaw to pass this small test as far as a crow could fly. This nervousness was more like the fear of being found when you are in a game of catch. You always get nervous when the seeker is close to your hiding spot. It is part of the game, no?

"Come on, Amberpaw. You have done well so far..." Treestar purred under his breath, amber eyes intense on his apprentice. All she had to do, was smell past the rabbit. She was so close!

Amberpaw sniffed the air only smelling the rabbit and earth around her. Amberpaw frowned, and stared at the rabbit and then sneezed again; the scent was still stuck in her nose. She sighed This isn't getting me anywhere... she thought looking around carefully...
