Rivertail ran along the edge of the river chasing the watervole as fast as he could, his paws pounding the bank, when suddenly, he slipped and splashed into the water. He swallowed a huge mouthful of river water, then resurfaced and climbed out, dripping. His sister, Shademoon, was twitching uncontrollably, then burst out laughing.
"Hey! It really isn't that funny." He protested, his face going red under his fur.
"Yes it is!!" Shademoon gasped. She never laughed like this in front of anyone other than her brother, because he was the only one who could make her laugh like this. The sight of him dripping in front of her, looking highly disgruntled and embarrassed was hilarious.
"That really isn't how you catch a watervole." She paused as she saw something twitch in the corner of her eye. "Why don't I show you?" she smiled, then leaped gracefully at the little brown creature, killing it with razor-sharp fangs.
"Okay, okay. You're such a show off." his words were sharp, but he smiled warmly at her. Why can't you laugh like that infront of the others, some day? he thought. He knew his sister could fit in if she wasn't so scared.
Shademoon knew what he was thinking. "One day, I will try. But...I'm not ready yet." There are too many horrible things inside me. "I'm still...not feeling great. But I'm trying...to make it go away. And it will. As long as you stay with me. I'll try." She said.
"I'm always here for you." He told her firmly. "I always will be. Just keep trying. Hold on." Don't give in... "You don't need to be afraid. I'm sure cats will love you when you let them see the real you. The feeling you're getting...I'm sure it will go away. It will go away."
I hope so... "Good. By the way..." she shook off her uneasy feelings and grinned, "You're soaking."
