Wildheart smiled back. She loved the feeling that she was being a good mentor. "I think we learned enough for the day, we will continue this lesson tomorrow." She couldn't believe that the sun was already setting. "Don't stop practicing the move that I taught you."
OOC: Should I make a new thread called training starpaw 2 or should i continue on this thread saying: The next day... ?

"Okay!" Starpaw agreed. The whole way back to camp, Starpaw practiced on an invisible opponent..
(probably just put- "the next day; would be easier I suppose!)

The next day....
Wildheart padded into the clearing of the flame tree, her apprentice keeping up with her long strides behind her. The sun was peeking out of it's night's sleep and was about to shine brightly on the two cat's training today. "Look at that sunrise, Starpaw! It's beautiful..."

Starpaw nodded, eyes widening in appreciation of the beautiful view. The sky blushed from deep blue to reddish orange to pink. Nearby clouds were stained the same pretty tinge. "Wow...." Starpaw didn't know what to say. It would ruin the moment if she tried. Finally, she turned to Wildheart. "What will I learn today, Wildheart?" Starpaw asked, sitting at attention, her ears pricked foward.

"Everday," Wildheart started, going through the plan in her head, "I've decided that we will do a little bit of hunting and fighting, does that sound all right? But first I want to see if you were practicing! Show me the front paw blow that I taught you yesterday!" Wildheart back up a few tail lengths and waited patiently. At how well Starpaw trained yesterday, she will surely do better today! she thought excitedly.

Without a moment's hesitation, Starpaw leapt forward and batted Wildheart's head as if she were trying to catch a mouse.
She sat back, grinning. "Did I do it right?" She asked, a little nervously. She wanted to do it right and show her mentor she had learned it and wasn't a slow learner.

"Ouch!" said Wildheart by accident. "That hurt!" Then she smiled at her apprentice. "I see you did practice, wich means you were listening to me, and that means you have no completed your first fighting technique! You are a wonderful apprentice, Starpaw! You learn so quickly! I remeber it taked me a couple of days to learn that one, you'll be a warrior before you know it! So," she said taking a breath, "Do you want to learn hunting or defense first today?"

Starpaw blushed. "Thanks Wildheart. I didn't hurt you too much though did I?" She looked worried for a moment. "Could we do some more hunting? I like fighting, but the freshkill pile was low when we left, so I thought we could help replenish it.."

Wildheart smiled. "You didn't hurt me, Starpaw, I was just surprised at how much you practiced. And good thinking, it's always good to check the fresh kill pile before you leave. Now," she said, "What do you smell?"

"Hmmm...." the white apprentice mused. "There's a... couple of voles over there.." she flicked her tail in that direction. "And a sparrow over there!" She pointed. "How do you stalk a bird? or a vole for that matter? like you would a mouse?"

"Let's start with the vole. Voles have bad eyesight and hearing but excellent touch. They can feel you faster then they can hear you. So it's just like catching a mouse, but you have to tread carefully with your paws. You don't want them to feel your pawsteps on the ground. Let's try it shall we? Begin." She was surprised at what she said. She couldn't believe that she remembered all of that. Wildheart hoped the apprentice got it.

Like a mouse.. Starpaw thought and crouched down low, keeping her footfalls as light as possible. "Like this?" She asked, demonstrating. She sniffed the air, pinpointing where the vole was. "Mmmmm.. That vole smells so good!" Starpaw meowed to Wildheart

Starpaw nodded reluctantly. She crouched down and padded forward in the correct position to catch a mouse. She waited until she was almost upon it and then sprang, landing on the vole..

Wildheart purred when her apprentice got the vole. And even on her first try! She is very talented at hunting, Wildheart noted, trying to keep that in mind. "Very good!" meowed Wildheart in apprection, "try to be more quiet when you land though, see, you scared the sparrow away! But that's okay, because I smell a thrush somewhere, can you find it?"

Starpaw lifted her nose into the air, trying to scent the thrush. Sher narrowed her eyes in concentration and stepped lightly in one direction. "Hmmm.. Um... is it over there?" She flicked her tail at a small bush, with bright red berries on it.

Wildheart purred, "Yes, it is. Now, birds, i think, is the most trickiest to hunt, because they are always alert. Though they can't smell, they hear, see, and feel good. So you have to be very quiet and watch were you are walking, make sure they can't see you, so it's good to be to the back of them, and tread very lightly when you stalk it. Since this thrush is lower to the ground, you can stalk it, but if it's high up, never go up on the tree with it. It will definitely fly off and you might hurt yourself. Jump and bring it down with your paw when it flies off. But you have to be quick, because birds fly faster than you can run."

Starpaw nodded. Okay. Be quiet, make no noise.. she thought to herself. She lowered herself into the crouch and carefully put each paw down, staying low to the ground and making sure she was out of sight of the bird. She crept closer and closer... Then, when she thought she was close enough, she leapt, and brought her paw down hard..

The bird squaked and turned right as Starpaw leaped. Eyes flashing with horror, the bird shot of into the trees and out of sight. "Nice try!" meowed Wildheart, "I think you were doing everything right, it's just that the bird just decided to turn at the wrong moment. Try again, I see a goldfinch on one of the lower branch of the flame tree. Remeber what I said about leaping after it flew off the branch."

Starpaw looked crestfallen as her prey flew away. At the chance to redeem herself in her mentor's eyes, Starpaw nodded intently and went back into bird catching mode. She padded forward silently and dashed out, leaping when the bird took flight. She attempted to swat the bird down at catch it with her claws...
