Talonpaw slips into the clearing near the creek, senses alert. He detects the distinct scent of a water vole. He pounces it, and buries it for later.

Autumnsong sniffed, the scent of her new apprentice washing over her. she observed him silently from her perch in the branches of the tree, watching the young cat stalk his prey.
he must be cautious of the wind direction... she thought absently, or he'll scare off whatever prey he comes by. i'll teach him that after he... her thought was cut short as Talonpaw caught the vole he was after.
The calico lept from the tree with a purr of congratulations. "Good work, Talonpaw." she called, moving smoothly over to the apprentice (her apprentice, she reminded herself). "Just be aware of the wind. a few tail lengths over and the vold would've scented you. you want to try again? tell me what you scent, whats hiding around here?"

"I smell three mice, a blackbird, a farfinch and..... FireClan traces?" (Why is FireClan here?)
A confused look crossed Talonpaw's eyes. "It smells like they killed a rabbit, yesterday. It's my friend Ninjapaw, wandering over the border accedentally, probably."

Autumnsong inhaled deeply, her jaws parting to let in the smells. he was getting most smells ok. he missed a robin in the high branches of the tree above, but she didn't expect him to be paying attention to something that far up.
her blue-green eyes narrowed. Fireclan... the scent was stale, at least a day old. how dare they steal Skyclan prey!
"Friend or not, they shouldn't be crossing the border." she said sternly, but not unkindly. "They could be attacked... it's just... not good. Never trespass on another clan's territory unless you have permission, Talonpaw. I don't want a Fireclan patroll to get you."
with that, she turned her attention to the prey. "You go after the nearest piece of prey. we'll get a couple more pieces and then head back. we need to tell our leader about the trespassing, even if it was just an apprentice." she said, softer now. perhaps she shouldn't tell... she had done plenty of foolish things as an apprentice (and now, too, she thought with a smile). but with tensions so high, things could go from mindless trespassing to all-out war in a heartbeat. nothing must go un-detected.

Talonpaw crawled through the undergrowth, he spotted the mice huddled together. Talonpaw pounced and killed them with his claws. One mouse started trying to escape but Talonpaw jumped in front of it and finished it off.

Autumnsong watched the apprentice catch the mice. odd, she hadn't seen a cat go after more than one mouse before. but then again, she had gone after several birds once....
"That was good, Talonpaw." she called. "Just try to keep your tail still, it was twitching as you stalked them. lets take what we have back to camp, we can talk to someone about the Fireclan trespasser."

The two walked in silence back to camp. Autumnsong wanted to blame that on the fact that her apprentice's jaws were filled with prey, but it also had something to do with the inability of her mind to think up questions to ask the young cat.
they neared the camp, and Autumnsong kept her eyes open, lifting her head to look for their leader.
"Can you see Dawnstar? perhaps she's in her den..." the she-cat said absently, half to her apprentice, half to herself.

"I'm sorry Autumnsong, Dawnstar just left on patrol, to the Giant Oak, to renew scent markers along the border with WaterClan. We should continue training for a while." Talonpaw turned to the exit. "Shall we go, Autumnsong?"

Autumsong raised an eyebrow at her apprentice's formality, but shrugged it off.
"well, sure. you want to learn how to fight? or we could go over how to maintain the borders. you seem to be alright at hunting already." she offered.

"Fighting sounds fine, Autumnsong. I need a bit of practice. Fighting warriors and other apprentices is much different than fighting my littermates!" Talonpaw mewed.

the calico laughed. "Not too much different. well, maybe the claws and teeth and actually trying to hurt each other is different, but other than that, there's the same goal:to win, right?" she chatted idly, starting to pad out of the camp, headed to a clearing not too far off. she motioned with her tail for Talonpaw to follow.
"Granted, I never won against my littermates. i was too busy adventuring to worry about fighting. but i'm better now, so i'll teach you what i know." she looked at the young cat, a friendly gleam in her eyes.
"Here we are," she said, pulling ahead of Talonpaw enough to turn and face him. "Alright, lets see where you are at the moment. now, i want you to attack me, got that? and keep your claws unsheathed, i don't want to end up in the medicine-cat den." she joked lightly, falling into a defensive stance, tail flickering.

Autumnsong stepped to one side, allowing the apprentice to pass her.
"Keep going! what'll you try now?" she encouraged, purposely slowing her turn to give Talonpaw an easier target.

she rolled over, freeing herself. "Alright, lets try it again." she said, taking a few steps back to fall into yet another stance, awaiting the younger cat's move.

Autumnsong slipped past the pounce, taking the oppertunity to aim a bat at the younger cat's ears.
"Try something else, and don't pounce right away. it's too predictable." she instructed calmly. "Try and pin me without me predicting it."

Autumnsong thought of throwing the apprentice off, but this was their first training session. better to let the kid win.
She relaxed, a smile on her face. "Better. much better. you took me by surprise there. do that in a battle and you'll have the upper hand. you wanna try defence now?"
