Starpaw padded back towards her clan, towards Fireclan, and found her paws strangely heavy. She shuddered. She wanted to keep as much distance between herself and Foxcloud for as long as she could, but considering the deputy's superb memory and the vengeance that shone in her eyes at the loss of her prey, Starpaw knew that time would be short... She found herself turning, and in no time, she stood in front of the Greak Oak, the place where the Clans met for the gatherings.... There was no cat here now, but the scents still lingered, Fireclan over there, Waterclan and Lightningclan close by, Earthclan on the hill and Skyclan closest to the tree.... She closed her eyes, trying to find some measure of peace before returning to her clan...She meowed softly, a sound of pain. Her life was unraveling so fast! Foxcloud had a death wish against her, her mentor Wildheart had gone missing, and she never seemed to see Dovepaw anymore. "Why Starclan," She meowed, her eyes glistening as she peered up at the stars, "Why is this happening? Why..." Her voice trailed off in the enormity of it all. Starclan stretched across the sky, their silvery light casting a silver glow upon the trees and the grass, and even her fur shone silvery in it's light. Starclan was so immense.... yet so silent...Starpaw could scarcely understand how they let such evil roam underneath their paws, while that same evil wreaked havoc upon the clans they once gave thier lives for....

Hiddenpaw ran from the camp angrily, her silver fur fluffed out. Who did Sunset think she was, parading around camp with her entire band? To think that was her mother. Hiddenpaw hissed angrily and whipped through the forestry. She let her paws carry her until she stumbled out into a clearing. Blinking around, she glanced up. Oh, the Giant Oak. Wonderful.
At least here Sunset wouldn't follow. Knowing that, Hiddenpaw plopped down and stared around. Another pelt caught her eye, and she blinked, realizing that it was Starpaw, a FireClan apprentice. Backing up, she felt like running back to camp, but couldn't bring herself to go back to Sunset. Instead she stayed, staring at Starpaw.

Starpaw whirled around at the sound of another cat, thinking that perhaps it was Foxcloud come to destroy her. Her fur fluffed out in fear as she studied the cat in front of her, and then it hit her, this wasn't Foxcloud. The she cat didnt look like Foxcloud, let alone was she from Fireclan. She was an Earthclan cat... Hiddenpaw! Starpaw let out a sigh of relief. "Hi Hiddenpaw. You scared me for a second." She meowed quickly giving her fur a lick to smooth it down. She shivered, despite the warmth of the air. "What are you doing here?" She asked, her bi colored eyes searching Hiddenpaw's eyes curiously. "I was taking Smallkit, a run away skyclan kit back to Skyclan..."She shuddered again, remembering how close to death she'd come at the paws of Foxcloud. Smallkit would do well to never again set paw on Fireclan territory, if she wished to live...

Hiddenpaw smiled, realizing that she had lived up to name. "I was running away from my awful family," Rolling her bright blue eyes, she stretched each leg. "But that doesn't really matter. What matters is that I got away." She thought about what Starpaw had done. "That's pretty brave Starpaw. I'm sure that Smallkit is grateful."

Starpaw shrugged. "I guess so....I don't feel very brave at this moment...In fact... that's why I'm here." She looked up at the stars, and then back to Hiddenpaw. "But...." she tilted her head. "Why would you run from your family? What did they do that you see them as..awful? I don't have a family, I thought they're usually the most wonderful things..." She stared unseeing ahead, envisioning the care and love that the kits in the nursery recieved from thier parents. She had never experienced that. She shrugged self conciously. It didn't really matter...

Hiddenpaw shrugged. "Nothing epic, my mother just abandoned me as a kit because I looked too much like her side of the family and risked exposing the family secret to..." Hiddenpaw glanced from the side of her eye at Starpaw. She was a FireClan apprentice... "Someone. It got exposed anyway, and now I hate her. She's trying to be all nice, but she abandoned me and I can't forgive her, at least not yet."

"Do you think that maybe she did it for your safety?" Starpaw meowed quietly. "For those reasons yes, but...perhaps she thought you'd be safer in a big clanful of cats to protect you? Earthclan is a big clan. A mother has a lot of reasons. I've heard of a mother's bond with her kits- how hard it is for her to leave any of them. I'm not saying your mom was right in just abandoning you, but....you have to think of what she was going through." The white apprentice meowed, trying to help. "You know.... bitterness will just eat away at you, til there's nothing left, right?"

Hiddenpaw stared at the FireClan apprentice. Was she bitter? Not terribly... "Starpaw, she kept her other three kits. They looked like her and my father, but no, I look the way I do and get turned away. It wouldn't hurt so much if I didn't know that she favored my siblings over me." Hiddenpaw sighed. "I was the youngest anyway, maybe that made it easier."

Starpaw looked surprised. "What? I thought you were an only kit." She meowed, "I didn't know your mom only abandoned you...." She pursed her lips, trying to make sense of what Hiddenpaw had just said. "But....That doesn't make sense....I can see why you're mad." She laid her tail on Hiddenpaw's shoulder. "What are your siblings like? They probably didnt know, unless your mom was proud of what she'd done, which I'm guessing isn't the case. "Starpaw sighed. "I'm sorry Hiddenpaw, I'm no use at giving advice." She smiled wryly. "I'm just a foolish apprentice, who doesn't know what she's talking about."

"I've only met one of them, and he was nice, if a bit over energetic. He didn't know." Hiddenpaw thought about Burning, laughing a bit at his excited personality. "I only know the names of the others..." Once again she looked sideways at Starpaw. Jet had been taken my Foxcloud, perhaps Starpaw knew of him? But, no, they were probably being kept in secret. "You're fine at giving advice Starpaw. We all think we stink at things."

Starpaw snorted at Hiddenpaw's words. "good at advice I'm not. Yes, we all stink at things." she grinned at the Earthclan apprentice. She jerked her head up as something hit her. "You know," she meowed, "your smell is familiar....and not because I've met you before." she meowed quickly, lest Hiddenpaw think her stupid. "But....." She narrowed her eyes, her brain racing. That cat... the one who Foxcloud had.. She...she smells like him She bolted upright. "Wait a minute, are you the sister of the cat that's being held prisoner by Foxcloud? The tom I mean?" She stared, everything else hitting her. "So that means you're..."

Hiddenpaw narrowed her eyes. "That I'm what? Strange? Weird? Awkward? Stupid? A rogue? Ah, that must be it, huh? So you've met Jet have you? That's more then I've ever done. I've never even seen him, at least not that I can remember." She scuffed the ground with her paw. Of course Starpaw had to recognize that bit of her scent. It was stupid really, whenever someone actually talked to her something about her drove them away. At least Lilypaw understood.

"No, that your mother's a rogue." Starpaw meowed. "I haven't really met him..." she added. "No cat except for Foxcloud and sometimes Darksky is allowed to see to them. I've smelled him, and seen him a couple of times, but that's it." She suddenly changed tactics. "Hiddenpaw, do you like your life in Earthclan?"

Hiddenpaw stared at the ground. "In a way. It feels like home, but I don't feel welcome. It's... it's hard to explain." She stared out in the direction of EarthClan, then turned the opposite direction, toward the High Hills. She could feel both ways calling her, but which would she rather choose? Hiddenpaw didn't know...

"Well...perhaps your mom wanted to give you a choice. You reminded her alot of her kin she left in the clans. Perhaps she wanted to give you a chance to choose where you'd place your loyalties? She didn't give your other siblings that choice.." Starpaw meowed. "I don't know.. you must be tired of me prattling on about your family when you don't get along so well with them right now..." Starpaw looked at her paws sheepishly. "I'm sorry, you came here to get away from your troubles for a bit, not have me remind you of them."

Hiddenpaw laughed. "You need to stop apologizing! You're just saying what's in my head..." Had Sunset given her a choice? Hiddenpaw didn't think so, she hadn't been told of this until she went sticking her nose around for answers. everything was so confusing!

Starpaw looked sheepish. "Sorry.. oops. There I go again!" She pawed her nose in embarrassment. "I can't help it...it's kind of... a habit, to apologize when I think I'm getting out of line and stuff. Which I seem to always do. Really? That's what you've been thinking too? Hmm...why don't you talk to your dad? Maybe he knows more about why your mom gave you up. They agreed upon it didn't they?" She prodded, tucking her tail close to her body. She shivered, it was starting to get cold...

Hiddenpaw was shaking her head before Starpaw could even finish. "No, no," she whispered. "He had no idea I even existed until I hunted my family down. And, well, he and my mother had a big fight, and..." Hiddenpaw's vision blurred. She was just a load, no one really wanted her.

Starpaw was at Hiddenpaw's side instantly. "C'mon, it'll be okay." She meowed, trying to comfort her friend. "I'm sure he'd love to meet you, you know. He probably wishes you'd grown up with your other siblings with them. You're an important part of your family. Don't ever think otherwise. C'mon, why don't we go see them now?" She meowed, hating to see Hiddenpaw so low...It was painfully clear she thought no cat wanted her, especially her parents, but...Starpaw just knew that was far from the truth..

Hiddenpaw shook her head roughly. "They are at the EarthClan camp..." she muttered. She once again glanced over at Starpaw. She hated keeping secrets, and Starpaw wouldn't pass things on to Foxcloud, would she? It wasn't like Foxcloud didn't already know... But she clamped her mouth shut and stared at the tree.
