"We could always say we tried to fish." Dawnflight grinned, shaking loose dust from her pelt as she stretched. The Medicine Cat flicked her ears at a fly that buzzed too close, and started off toward the faint gurgle of the river. "They'd believe me; I've always been horrible at it."

Hollypaw grinned. "What, do you try to outswim the fishies? you know, make 'em tired and then attack?" She teased, her tail held high as she followed Dawnflight. Soon, the river came into view, it's waters gleaming in the sunlight. The burbling of the river was soft and tranquil..

"Ouch! And you call yourself a Waterclan cat? Well, we can remedy that." Hollypaw meowed with a smile. "Why don't I teach you to swim? It's great fun, and really easy once you get the hang of it!" She meowed. "The water's great fun, and cool- perfect relief for a hot greenleaf day."

Dawnflight stared at the river skeptically, watching it carve it's way downstream. It looked like it might sweep her off her paws the moment she stepped in. "I don't know..." Then the mud caked in her fur crackled, and she winced.
"Well, alright. It is a bit ridiculous, isn't it? Being the WaterClan Medicine Cat and not being able to swim a tail length?"

"Not ridiculous, naah. There are a few Waterclan cats I'd think who don't like water but... they're mostly elders really." Hollypaw meowed, giving Dawnflight an apologetic look. "But, really, it's pretty easy. And I'll get you if anything happens. But...if you want, we can take another warrior with us, you know, because they're more knowledgeable and stronger than I. It might make you more reassured. But one way or another, we'll get you to learn to swim! For safety if not for fun. Hollypaw looked at the river, smiling, and then back to Dawnflight. "So, what do you think?"

Dawnflight snorted back a laugh, "Oh yeah, that makes me feel so much better--are you calling me old now?" The she-cat grinned, disarming her accusing words, and pretended to think for a moment. Then: "All right, I'm willing to learn if you're willing to teach."

Dawnflight sniffed primly, blue eyes glittering mischieviously. "I'll remember that in the future." Then she grinned and scrambled after Hollypaw, aiming a friendly swat at her tail. "Keep calling me ancient, my scrawny mentor, and I shall impart to you my vast knowledge of drowning."

"Who're you calling scrawny?" Hollypaw mrrowed, enjoying their banter. "You're scrawnier than I, oh ancient grey furred one!" She laughed, pulling her tail away just in time to avoid Dawnflight's playful swat. " See? Look you missed!" She grinned hopping down several boulders til she landed on soft grass once more. The lake was not more than several feet away..

"Why you, deary." The white she-cat's voice took on a elderly, maternal tone, "I may be old, but at least I've more muscle to me than a newborn mouse! You, on the other paw..." Grinning back, Dawnflight leaped down the boulders, clearing them in a single bound. She landed next to Hollypaw with a gentle thud, a smirk twitching at her ears, "You're simply scrawny."

"Heyyyyy!! I'm not scrawny I'm......naturally thin and slender! Yeah, that's it! I've got muscle, it's just hidden!" She said with a mrrow of laughter. She stepped into the cool lake water, the waves gently lapping at her black paws. She waded in further, her eyes closing halfway in pleasure as the icy chill of the water lessened the heat. "Why don't you wade in a bit, Dawnflight? don't try swimming yet, just get used to the water. Oooh, that feels nice..." She meowed with a sigh.

"Really? Must be a great hiding place." Dawnflight snickered to the younger she-cat. Then she had to hide a grimace; but StarClan, how she hated getting her bellyfur wet! Biting back a groan, the Medicine Cat waded down the back until the lakewater rippled past her elbows. "... This okay?"

Hollypaw grinned. "Oh, it is. How else do you think I catch muscular apprentices off guard when I battle them?" She grinned. "Or wrestle medicine cats in the water?" She teased, her eyes sparkling with mirth. "Yes, that's perfect, just get used to the water, it's weight, it's flow, things like that. Why don't you move about a bit, get used to how it feels when you move in the water. Can you feel yourself floating a bit? That'll happen as you go in a bit deeper. Don't worry, I'll get you if you start to sink." The black apprentice promised, her paws kneading the smooth riverstones under the water. "When you get deeper, and can't feel the bottom, move your paws kind of like you're walking, but..hmmm...hard to explain." Hollypaw meowed, stopping to try to think of a better way to explain. She kept a careful eye on Dawnflight, and was ready to move if something should go wrong..

"Dumb luck?" Dawnflight grinned back, then sneezed when a water droplet landed on her nose. Snorting, she padded out a bit farther, until she felt her paws just brush against the bottom. Her legs paddled awkwardly against the light current, her expression unsure. Wobbling in the water suddenly, she gave a startled squeak, but managed to keep herself right-side up. She laughed sheepishly, "Ack, I don't think I'm meant to swim."

Hollypaw laughed. "Could be that too!" She said with a grin, paddling over to Dawnflight. "No, no you're doing fine!" She coaxed. "Its always this way for beginners. Don't worry, use stronger strokes of your paws, you'll go faster, and your balance? hmmm..." Hollypaw studied Dawnflight's motions trying to help her find her balance in the water. "Just keep trying, I think that your balance will come with practice." She said with an encouraging smile.

Dawnflight snorted again, but this time it had nothing to do with clearing her nose. "Oh, I'm sure it will--after I've sank to the bottom." Grinning, the Medicine Cat pushed harder against the water, trying to tread water while retaining some shred of dignity...

Hollypaw laughed, and managed to swallow water, sending her into a fit of choking coughs. "D-dawnflight, hahaha! No worries, stop being a silly furball!" She meowed, her coughing fit slowing down, "You're improving already! Haha, don't flub and make me have to take back that statement!" She teased, paddling closer to the medicine cat...

Dawnflight gave the apprentice a baleful look, though her eyes sparkled with mischief.
"But I'm so good at being a silly furball!" She whined. Then she laughed, kicking her paws harder, "And besides, it looks like you're the one flubbing, O Great and Mighty Mentor."
