"I don't mind at all." The Medicine Cat replied, the lake-shine still dancing in her eyes.
But what would you think if I told you that I'd only been in WaterClan for a few moons by the time you were born...? It wasn't talked much about anymore, but Dawnflight had come to WaterClan as a wanderer, searching for a purpose. The newest generation of cats probably hadn't heard much about it, especially with this war going on; Dawnflight had earned the Clan's trust, and there was no real reason to dredge up the past anymore. It was for fear of shattering that trust that she didn't tell Hollypaw about her birthclan, though she felt a stab of guilt for compounding the she-cat's words. It felt almost like a betrayal.
Instead, she simply nodded, trying to keep a cryptic edge from her voice, "I'm sure at least a few of our clanmates have their own secrets."

Hollypaw nodded, completely unaware of the irony of Dawnflight's words. "Yeah, I'm sure- every cat has thier own secret..." The black apprentice's head lowered. "Even me, though it's probably not much of a secret."

A stab of guilt? Scratch that. Impaled by guilt was more like it. Dawnflight found that she couldn't meet Hollypaw's eyes until the apprentice lowered her head. She hesitated for a moment, then gently flicked Hollypaw's shoulder with her tail.
"Big or small, they all have meaning." The Medicine Cat said softly, feeling thoroughly horrible about herself. "They all have reasons for being kept." Even if it seems silly... Or cowardly.
OOC: Ugh, muse is on strike. >.>;

Hollypaw nodded. " Yeah...." She made a face. "And I never could keep my own secrets- they always eat a hole inside of me. Well....I suppose you already know about my sister Dreampaw, and how she left the clan, so it's really no secret..." Hollypaw suddenly blushed, "Unless we start talking about crushes, and then I have a secret." she fidgeted, looking extremely uncomfortable.

IC: "Well, yes." Dawnflight said, "I knew she left, but not the specifics." Looking uncomfortable, the white she-cat flexed her claws, and immediately regretted it when mud oozed between her toes and stained her already marred fur. Her muzzle curled, and she winced before giving a dry chuckle. Would she ever really get used to WaterClan?
Her laugh turned into a knowing smile at the sight of Hollypaw's blush. "We don't have to talk about crushes if you don't want to, then."

"Thanks," She meowed in relief. She made a face as the mud squelched and sucked her paw deep into the puddle. "Ickkkk!! It's getting worse...It's not usually this wet; the forest sucks up most of the water, but I guess it had too much to drink." Hollypaw pulled her paw out of the mud with a soft, squuuiiishhhhch. "And I always wondered why Dreampaw left..." She mewed, looking a little sad. "But I have to believe that she's happier where she is now, in Skyclan, and that she had a good reason for leaving. I miss seeing her, but..." She shrugged, trying to appear nonchalant. "Did you have any siblings?" Hollypaw asked..

Dawnflight laughed, but gently. "I'm sure she did." Growing quiet again, her whiskers twitched thoughtfully. If the war hadn't been going on, Dawnflight would've been able to travel to SkyClan to speak with their Medicine Cat if the need arose...
She shook her head to clear her thoughts--surely she couldn't... could she? Not with these tensions, certainly.
Finally, Dawnflight glanced back at Hollypaw. "I was the only kit in my parents' first litter... I'm not sure if I have any younger brothers or sisters from any later ones floating around out there."

Hollypaw tilted her head to the side, confused. "But... you're a clan cat- aren't your parents still here? Well, when you were an apprentice and such, right? Unless... They didn't leave did they?" she meowed, looking shocked..

Though she should have expected such a question, Hollypaw's words sent a jolt through Dawnflight. She'd treaded into dangerous territory when told Hollypaw about her apprenticeship--of course the young cat would keep asking questions. She was a bright she-cat, and Dawnflight had contradicted herself. Dawnflight knew she could make up a lie, and Hollypaw would most likely believe her; Medicine Cats were supposed to be trusted, right? But Dawnflight just didn't have the heart to do it.
Instead, the white cat sighed and paused in mid-step, ignoring the fact that she was paw-deep in mud. "Oh, I'm sure they're still around. They're probably elders by now." Glancing back at the black-furred apprentice, she managed a weak smile. "You see, Hollypaw, they didn't leave... I did."

"Huh?" Hollypaw had known something was different about Dawnflight, but....the fact that she was from a different clan was astonishing! or.. was it a rogue? "You left your original clan?" she meowed, deciding to go with the clan theory. "Was something wrong?"

Affirming Hollypaw's thoughts, Dawnflight nodded slowly and felt a weight lift from her shoulders. "Yes, WaterClan... WaterClan's not my birthclan." She flicked her ears sadly and finally padded to a drier spot. "But, no, nothing was wrong. In fact, things were as close to perfect as they could have been."

"But then....why would you leave it? You had an idyllic life from what it sounds, great family, nice clanlife... Did something happen when you were there, like with a warrior or something? I hope you don't mind my prying, but.... I could never leave Waterclan, so it's just...mindboggling for me.." Hollypaw admitted, stepping out of the mud, only to hit a deeper mud pit. She didn't even notice..

She hadn't spoken about her past--at least more than being from a different Clan--with any other cat since she'd joined WaterClan. "I didn't want to leave and I couldn't imagine leaving either, Hollypaw." She continued, a bit of sadness creeping into her voice when she smiled at the apprentice. "But I didn't get much of a choice; the day I became a full Medicine Cat, I was caught by two-legs and taken away."

Hollypaw gasped, her brown eyes widening in shock. "A two leg took you??" She stared at Dawnflight, flabbergasted. "I.. I never knew that....How... how did you escape? and...does this mean that your clan isn't from the clans around here?" She meowed, that revelation dawning on her. "Otherwise you'd be back with them.."

OOC: I had to go back and look at her bio. I've been having trouble keeping up with my own cats lately. x.x
IC: Dawnflight nodded, curling her muddy tail around her muddier paws. "He kept me inside his nest for the longest time..." Her eyes turned to slivers of ice as she squinted them thoughtfully, "I think it was about six moons before I got the chance to escape... And I was always watching, waiting for it to come. One day he left the entrance open for a little too long, and I dashed between his feet and hopped the fence. He looked so surprised..."
The Medicine Cat shook her head, still faintly amused at the memory. Then, she flicked Hollypaw's shoulder with her tail and twitched her ears at the black cat's astonished expression. Again, she had the perfect chance to lie to the she-cat, but the thought appalled her now.
"That's a good assumption," Dawnflight nodded, and, in truth, that was what she generally let cats believe, "but I am from around here--I managed to keep a little luck through it all, and the twoleg didn't take me too far... Just a day's walk from here..."

"That's so hard....Was all your family gone by the time you'd escaped? I'm so sorry..." she meowed, looking down at her paws. It hurt to think of Dawnflight being separated from her family; she knew what that felt like with Dreampaw in a different clan. But.. "If they weren't that far away, why didn't you go back to them? To your old clan? did you think it'd be better if no one knew you were alive or something?" she asked..
(lol that's okay! XD I have that saaaame exact problem =P my bios tend to be different than the cat I rp with lately.. =P)

IC: "I'm sure my father and foster mother were still there." She replied, with a wink. "They weren't that old. And I had every intention of returning home... But, when I finally made it back, the first cat I met was my old mentor... and his new apprentice." Dawnflight smiled at Hollypaw, and there was no bitterness in her voice, "He was happy to see me, of course--it was like I'd come back from the dead. But..." She shook her head helplessly, tilting her eyes toward the sky and following the clouds with her eyes. "I realized that if I came back, I'd only cause chaos. For one thing, that poor little apprentice would have probably been out of a job if I took my old spot back, and I'd have been a dead weight to the Clan if I'd tried to do anything else..." The Medicine Cat shrugged and glanced back at the black she-cat, "So I left before most of them found out I'd returned. Maybe it was the wrong choice, but... I couldn't bear to cause them anymore trouble."
OOC: Gah, sorry for flooding you with Dawnflight-backstory. XD

"Oh....I see why you left. That was thoughtful of you... and it must have been really hard to do it though. But... I'm kind of glad you did- or else I wouldn't have met you, and gotten to be friends. And Waterclan would be without it's greatest medicine cat." Hollypaw meowed. "I know we can never take the place of your lost family and friends, but... we are your family too." She added quietly. "I hope you feel like you belong here.."

IC: Beneath her fur, Dawnflight felt the blood rush to her muzzle, and she was sure her ears were positively glowing pink. "Oh, I don't know about "greatest". I can't even keep track of my own apprentice." She purred and grinned. Hollypaw's words seemed to send a wave of warmth flooding through her chest.
"Thank you, Hollypaw. I do." Her voice was full of gratitude, her eyes tender, "I'm glad I got the chance to meet you, too. I may not have been born here, but WaterClan is my home. I can't imagine a better place to belong, or greater cats to call my family."

Hollypaw grinned. "Hey, not your fault we apprentices are so slippery. Cherrypaw'll calm down a bit and then things will be back to normal." Hollypaw ducked her head, her turn to be embarrassed, but she was purring. This was what tied Waterclan together- thier utter, to the death loyalty to one another. Each cat would die for the other, if necessary. There were stronger ties than blood after all...
(bleah... my post is kind of lame...didn't know what to say....)
