Froststar and Crowpaw's training!

Crowpaw looked around, enjoying the feel of the breeze whispering through his fur. The air was sweet with the scent of water. He wondered if this was where Froststar wanted to train. A pang of guilt plagued him. He probably should have waited until she'd woken and not run off without telling any cat where he went. He glanced at the trees, and grinned. Why not practice his jumping skills while he waited? He hurried over to the nearest one, a tall sturdy elm with a few low hanging branches. He leapt to one, and then bunched his muscles and leapt to the next, higher branch..

Froststar opened her sleepy eyes. "Hello Crowpaw. I see you've already started." She was waiting on a much higher branch on a different tree. She had snuck out last night to brush up on her skills and had fallen asleep in a tree. A big yawn escaped her taunt jaws.

Crowpaw jumped, almost falling off his branch. Where'd Froststar come from??? "Sheesh! You scared the fur off of me!" He complained, jumping up to her branch. ..

[Rosefeather]

Froststar purred. "If only it was that simple. I'd be able to stop all battles by scaring the enemy. Now then," she shook away her sleepiness, "I'm going to teach you to hunt in trees, then we'll go check out the rogues and use spying techniques."

"Yes!" Crowpaw cheered, grinning. "Bring it on! And.... how do you know you don't have the power to really scare the fur off other cats? have you ever tried?" His eyes gleamed mischeviously...

"Don't give me that, I was a young cat once too. I had my fair share of ambusing others." Froststar was proud of her record, but she had many chores as an apprentice as a result. She cleared her throat. "The key is balance. And luck, but that doesn't count."

Crowpaw laughed. He tried to imagine Froststar as an apprentice, ambushing all who came her way. It was a funny sight indeed, and he laughed again, before struggling to be serious as Froststar started her lesson. "'Course luck doesn't count- luck isn't constant." Crowpaw meowed. "As for balance? We'll see if I have it I guess!" He replied, preparing to leap to another branch..

"Don't be so sure. Practice climbing along the branches silently for awhile." Froststar scoffed.

Crowpaw nodded, now totally focused on the task at hand. He leapt- landing lightly on the branch above, bending his legs to take some of the force of his landing. He looked down at Froststar, hoping it hadn't been to noisy...

Froststar turned her ears back, emphasizing that fact that it was noisy. "You almost blew out my earhair. Try again." She sat down, her back claws digging in the maintain her slight balance.

Crowpaw made a face, but tried again, muttering quietly to himself. He jumped gingerly- and almost missed the branch for his pains. He yelped and grabbed on with his claws, and hauled himself up to the branch.....

Froststar couldn't help but laugh. "Shall we go down lower?" she said tauntingly.

Crowpaw glared at his mentor and stuck his tongue out before turning his attention back to the next branch. He took a deep breath, and pushed off powerfully, making sure he was on the end closest to the tree trunk, where it wouldn't move as much, and thus make less noise. He landed gently on the branch above....

Froststar turned away. There was only the slightest sound, but still enugh to scare the prey away. She sighed, counting backwards until she would show him how to do it correctly.

"I made noise didn't I?" Crowpaw meowed, getting a little frustrated. He (noisily lol!) hopped back down to Froststar's branch, where he sat, glowering at himself. "What do I have to do to be quiet??" He meowed in exasperation....

Froststar sighed. Crowpaw's frustration would only hold back his talent. "When you step on a branch, it isn't like walking on the ground. The branches have curves. Spread your toes out like this, and as you step, first put your weight on your toes, then slowly roll it back." Froststar demonstrated.

Still a little annoyed with himself, he imitated Froststar, realization dawning on him as what she said clicked in his mind. "Ohhhhhhhhhhhh!" He meowed, eyes wide. He mentally kicked himself, but pushed it aside, and experiemented by leaping to the next branch, and putting his weight on his toes first, them curling it back slowly...

Froststar grinned. "See? You can do it!" She jumped a few branches up, the jumps silent.

Crowpaw was thrilled. He watched Froststar jump ever so silently from one branch to the next, and then leapt into action himself, trying out the new technique and following his mentor up to the highest branches that would support his weight. "Whoa.....Everything's so tiny from here! We're on top of the world!" He meowed, eagerly looking all around. He could see their camp from here!

Froststar purred, the sound lost to the wind. Her claws dug in, balancing her weight. "Almost. Sometimes, I just climb up in a tall tree, and watch over our territory, letting the breeze sway my worries away." Her eyes closed, taking in the peacefulness of being so high. "Then I look down and realize I can't run away. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like I could catch the clouds in my paw. With one... swipe..." She whispered. Reaching up with one paw, she swiped at the dark clouds.
