Dawnflight sat back on her haunches and sighed as she stared out from the mouth of her den. So much was happening, so many conflicts had started. The white Medicine Cat shook her head slowly as she gazed across her adopted Clan's camp, watching the warriors and apprentices. She hadn't even been able to pay attention properly to it all, either. The past few days had kept her so busy... Without Cherrypaw, who seemed to have disappeared, the simple task of gathering and organizing herbs, tending to the Clan's daily ailments, and keeping up with the current events was beginning to feel overwhelming.

Crowkit wandered in, slightly bored. He had nothing to do and was forbidden from leaving the camp (like all kits, but especially pertaining to him because he'd snuck out once). "Hi Dawnflight." He meowed, expecting to see his sister, Cherrypaw somewhere in the den, but didn't. "Where's Cherrypaw?" He meowed, slightly confused. Had Cedarpaw played another prank on him and told him Cherrypaw was the medicine cat apprentice and really wasn't? (he hasn't been out of the nursery too often)

Interrupted in her pondering, Dawnflight drew her gaze away from the Clan to the little kit. "Oh, hello Crowkit." The Medicine Cat frowned and shook her head silently. "I'm not sure where your sister is, dear. I haven't seen Cherrypaw in quite a while..."
Stifling a sigh and forcing her expression to brighten, Dawnflight smiled a little at Crowkit. "So, what are you up to today?"

Crowkit frowned in thought. Where could Cherrypaw be? He shrugged- perhaps with Lakeripple or out hunting? "Being bored..." He replied. "Can I stay here for a bit?" He meowed. "Everyone else is busy..."

Dawnflight smiled warmly. She adored kits, even if she couldn't have any of her own. "Of course, Crowkit." The she-cat glanced back at her den and the piles of nearly stacked herbs. "I'm nearly finished here. Is there something you'd like to do?"

IC: "Well..." Began the she-cat, taking a mental inventory of the herbs she had stocked, "Since your sister isn't around, would you like to help me?" Dawnflight flicks her tail past the border of the camp, "We're running low on a few herbs. Would you like to come with me to find them? It shouldn't take too long..."

(lol! Um.... that's up to you- we could finish the 'day' and then the next day he's an apprentice what do you think?)
Crowkit's ears perked up. "Sure!" He loved getting out and seeing the territory. Maybe he could learn about what Cherrypaw did as a medicine cat apprentice. It looked very interesting..."Dawnflight, what does a medicine cat apprentice learn?" He meowed. "Do they get to battle train too?"

IC: Dawnflight grinned at Crowkit's sparkling expression. With Cherrypaw gone, she'd sorely missed that sort of enthusiasm!
"Well, they learn which types of herbs grow where, and what they're used for, and how to recognize and treat many types of injuries and illnesses... To name just a few things."
The white cat paused, winking at the kit. Every young cat always asked the same question at some point. "Of course." Dawnflight smiled again, "Medicine Cats are sometimes needed in the thick of battles, and fighting doesn't pause for our work." Puffing up her chest proudly, the Medicine Cat beamed down at Crowkit, "Sometimes we have to protect the cats we work to heal. We have to know at least the basics, so we're not left defenseless when times like that roll around." And hopefully they won't, any time soon. The mentally added thought was nice, but not likely in the troubled times the Clans were going through now...

Crowkit looked really interested. "Really? That sounds pretty neat. What's this herb?" he meowed, sniffing a clump of green leafy plants..

Dawnflight only needed to take a quick glance to know which herb Crowkit was asking about. "That's watermint," the she-cat replied, happy to answer his question, "it's used to treat bellyaches."

"Really?" He memorized it's scent- it was always helpful to know these kinds of things. "If there's ones for bellyache, shouldn't there be an herb for greencough?" he asked, thinking of the terrible disease that killed many cats...

Hearing two cats conversation, the very bored Spottedstream padded over. "The herb you're talking about would be cat nip. Am I right Dawnflight?"

Pricking her ears, Dawnflight looked up from Crowkit to see Spottedstream coming closer. With a smile, she nodded, "Yes, catnip's best for greencough." She grinned, an oddly goofy expression, especially for a Medicine Cat. "You can scent the stuff from foxlengths away, too." Dawnflight, like most cats, loved the delicious smell of catmint.
Stopping to tilt her head for a sudden moment, thinking, she glanced back at Crowkit. "But also, since it's so dangerous, we sometimes use small doses of tansy for the cough, and feverfew to help with chills and fever."

"Yes," Dawnflight agreed, nodding before continuing modestly, "But I had a lot of time to learn it all, and my mentor, Nightcall, was a very good teacher." The white she-cat sat back on her haunches, smiling faintly at the memory of her old mentor. "And I had a lot of my own experiences to learn from, too."

" It's funny how things change." Spottedstream sighed, reminescing. "One day you can be a bundle of fur who only gets into mischief, the next a wise medicine cat!" Glancing at Crowkit she added "Don't get any ideas though, Crowkit. The best way you can help your clan is by listening to what your leader tells you."

Crowkit grinned. Listen to Froststar? "Were you once a michevious bundle of fur?" He meowed grinning. He had loved to listen to the two cats' conversations. It was so.. educational and just plain pleasurable to listen.
