Fishing in the High Hills

Burning looked up, eyes full of trust. For some reason, he trusted Byakko, like he trusted his parents. He nodded, and pushed aside his worry, but not without some effort. "Well.. could you.. teach us to swim? and talk to other creatures? and tell us about StarClan, especially this Whitemoon and the Moonrise that's not my sister I keep hearing about?" He meowed, taking the fish but not eating it yet..

Byakko grinned. "Of course, although, speaking different tongues takes time. I'll teach you to swim in the spring. The water won't be as cold. I don't know how Courage stood it!" Byakko's grey eyes laughed.

Burning smiled and laughed. "Courage is a strange cat. Who knows... maybe he's not even a real cat! And thanks Byakko! I can't wait!" He squealed, turning back to the kit, and not the solemn older cat that he'd been since Jet was taken..

Byakko laughed with Burning, feeling happy that she could help the To-Be forget his worries for now. She started eating her fish now, having piled up most of the scales beside her. The meat was delicious compared to the other animals, then she remembered something important. "I'll only teach you non-prey language though. I refuse to burden others with my curse."

"Okay!" He meowed happily, scaling his fish eagerly in anticipation of eating it He stopped, paw on the silver side of the fish, giving Byakko a confused glance. "Why do you call it a curse? Wouldn't it help you know things about them, so you could hunt better?" he asked...

"It would help, but how can I kill something that is screaming up at me, 'Don't kill me, please! I beg of you!'?" Byakko laughed somewhat.

Light dawned in Burning's eyes. "Ohhhh." He meowed. He hadn't thought of that. "So that's why you don't eat prey besides fish.." he meowed, the pieces clicking together in his head- all those mysteries about why Byakko only ate certain prey vanishing in the light of the truth. "Byakko... can you tell me a story? Please?" he begged. "One about Starclan!" His blue eyes shone (uhh... I think they're blue *runs away to look*

Byakko grinned, "Of course!" She paused, thinking of a good story. Once she had one Byakko cleared her throat softly, speaking in a mysterious tone;
"The lands were peaceful. All creatures had enough to eat, and the earth was rich. This time lasted for many moons, and everyone was happy. But then a terrible illness poisoned the earth and all the creatures. Hords died within a quarter moon. The survivers used thier last breaths to pray for a solution. The stars remained silent though. The creatures died, all except one, the cat. The stars shined brightly upon the single, lonesome cat and granted the sickly thing one wish. The cat's name was Moon, and he was a selfless being, he lived to protect the other creatures, but they withered away in his paws. Moon raised his head to the stars and said this, "My only wish to not be the only one. Please bring back the other creatures." The stars twinkled, laughing softly.
"We'll bring back your friends if you take their place." Their voices chimed.
Without hesitation, Moon agreed. There was a flash of light and the earth was green once more, and all the other creatures returned, healthy and well. They turned in time to see Moon's figure raising into the sky, glowing bright. The stars then placed him in the middle, a huge glowing orb known as the Moon. And he now watches the decendants of his friends every night, but sometimes he turns away to visit with the stars."
Byakko's grey eyes twinkled with wisdom.

Burning listened with rapt attention. "Whoa...." A grin lit his features. "Moon was so selfless- he thought of others above himself. "Wouldnt it be amazing," Burning meowed, "if all cats cared about each other this way? There wouldn't be any fights and we'd all live in peace, right Byakko? Where'd you hear these stories?" He asked, grinning. He loved stories- sometimes, if he was lucky, Skywalker told him and his littermates stories too, his most favorite thing other than being with his family-which included the HHB. "Are you a clan cat, Byakko?" he asked, his question of where she heard the stories making him wonder if she'd heard it from the clans..

[Rosefeather]

Byakko chuckled. "No, but sometimes I feel like I am. I have had this ability to hear the wispers of the High Ones since I came here. I've heard all the stories. The selflessness of Moon taught the Clans to care for eachother, but I'm afraid that all of the Old Ones have forgotten the most important stories. Moon himself told me the story. I'll tell you the others anytime you want." She finished her fish, standing up to dig a hole.

"Yes, please!" Burning wriggled with excitement at the prospect of listening to more stories.

Once her fish remains were covered by earth, Byakko cleaned her paws in a ceremonial way. Her eyes were closed, but she spoke softly. "Many of our kind only know the cruelness of the world. There has always been one species that has never forgotten the stories though."

Burning leaned closer, his curiousity aroused. "What? What species, Byakko?" He meowed, hoping she'd tell.

Byakko grinned, breaking her mythical-like trace. "Well you'll find out once your learn the languages!" She patted the small lump in the ground that was once her fish and uttered a short prayer for the fish's soul. She looked up, realizing she hadn't done that since the time she was with the old fox. How strange. Maybe the talk of old stories is reawakening my fox-like habits? Byakko thought with a frown.

Burning groaned. "Awww.... Just when I thought you were going to explain." He grumped. "....Can I start now?" He asked, his moods swiftly changing...

Byakko considered. "Sure! We'l start with bird first. They're simple creatures, but the variances of tones can be the difference of a complete conversation. Just repeat what I say and slowly we'll go over the most common things said."

(can we skip this long lesson and pretend something like BAM! All of a sudden Burning has the ability to speak bird! @o@)

(*dies laughing* Of course! I don't blame you *bestows the gift of bird tongue on Burning using a magic wand* Poof~)

Burning paid careful attention to the lessons. It was harder than he'd thought to speak in another tongue. His mouth just didn't want to do some of those sounds. He resolved to practice. Maybe he could converse with a bird and see if he'd gotten anywhere. "Thanks Byakko! Heehee- I'll practice with Moonrise- It's a code!" He grinned

Byakko let out a small sigh. Burning had progressed amazingly. "Don't confuse anyone too much! Practice talking to birds for awhile, then we'll move on to squirrel."

Burning jumped for joy. "I will! I'll talk so much I'll chatter as much as the birds!" He meowed, smiling. "What we gonna do now? Courage is taking an awfully long time to take those fish to camp. I'm waaaay past dry now!"

"Let's go back, it's getting dark." Byakko stood up, shaking out her back legs. "I'll race ya!" She suddenly sped off, laughing all the way.
