"Shademoon, why don't we train Hollypaw here?" asked Rivertail when they reached the spot. "We can move a little away the river, though..." he said, remembering the story of his mousebrainedness.
Shademoon's whiskers twitched with amusement. "Yes, you wouldn't want to fall in again, would you?" she teased. "Mousebrain." she giggled at him. It felt strange...she hadn't giggled for a long time. "Okay Hollypaw. You ready?" Nor had she spoken so confidently to a cat other than Rivertail.

Hollypaw giggled too as she imagined Rivertail looking a like a drowned rat and then shone a charming innocent smile at Rivertail.
"Am I ever!" She purred, turning to Shademoon. She wriggled happily..

"Okay then. What has your mentor taught you so far in battle training?" she asked. She didn't want to teach the young cat things she already knew.
Rivertail settled himself on the ground nearby and watched over his sister.

(she hasn't been trained yet at all, but we'll say she's been trained more in hunting than in battle, how's that?)
"Not too much." She confessed. "But it's not his fault. Things are chaotic around here. I learned more hunting than battle, since there was more need for it." She grinned sheepishly.

"Okay." Hollypaw replied. She knew Shademoon was faster than her- most cats were- but perhaps she could use her wits to surprise Shademoon. She crept towards the she cat, and leapt at her- only to tuck her head into her body and roll under Shademoon. She lashed out with her paws...

"Oh!" the dark grey cat meowed as the apprentice caught her in the belly. She jumped back. "Well done! That was nicely thought out. Surprise is probably the best resource in a battle." she glanced at her brother. "Well, I think so anyway. But mousebrain over here relies more on physical aspects than tracks and intelligence and so on...but I think you'd be better off using your brain." she looked Hollypaw in the eyes. "Now...defence. I'm not going to do anything too complex, I just want you to practise how you bat away an attacker's paw if they're trying to hit you. There's a certain way of doing it. You have to use a smooth movement, and don't follow through too much or you'll overbalance." She raised a paw. "Deflect my blow." She lashed out lightly, more slowly than she normally would, but not too slowly, and aimed at the apprentice's chest.

Hollypaw flushed with the unexpected praise and sat attentively as Shademoon explained defensive movements. Smooth, don't follow through too much.. she thought to herself. Hollypaw struck out, as Shademoon's paw sliced through the air towards her chest, but she had done what Shademoon had said not to- she had followed through entirely too much and lurched forward, an easy target for Shademoon's blow..

Shademoon stopped her blowbeforeithitthe apprentice's chest."Well, that was okay...but just remember, once it's made contact with my paw and pushed it out of the way, it doesn't need to go any further. You need to be able to draw back and aim your own blow as soon as you've pushed mine away." she readied herself. "Try again." she aimed another gentle blow, the same speed as before, aiming for the apprentice's chest.

Hollypaw nodded and concentrated as Shademoon repeated the drill. She lashed out, and swatted Shademoon's paw aside, sweeping it up to lightly bat Shademoon's throat.
"Did I do it right that time?" She asked anxiously, looking from Shademoon to Rivertail and back again.

"Perfect." Shademoon purred. "Okay....now we should start on more complicated attacks. Like that first one you did. It was very good...so maybe we could work on developing more attacks like that? And I could teach you some tricks of my own. It's important to use your mind in battle." she glanced again at her brother. "Or rather...I think it is." she giggled again at her brother.
Rivertail stared at her sister in amazement. She was laughing! He hadn't seen her like this for...he didn't know how long it had been. Perhaps never, not since she was a kit.

Hollypaw giggled. "Rivertail doesn't use his brain!" She teased, giving a goofy grin to the tom. She noticed his pleasantly surprised look that he directed towards his sister, and Hollypaw wondered why. "What kind of attacks do you use?" she asked after the laughter had subsided once more.

Don't be too subtle, your'e not trying to win, I just want to show you how to defend against cats like him." she flicked her ears at her brother.

The black she cat nodded, giggling inside. Shademoon definitely loved to tease her brother! She her attack obvious, leaping at the she cat, paws outstretched and ready to slash...

Shademoon let the cat jump on her, but then reared up on her hind legs, using her body as a lever to throw Hollypaw off. It took no strength for that kind of move.

Hollypaw used her momentum to right herself in the air, landing softly on her paws. "Oh, so that's what you mean!" The light dawned in Hollypaw's eyes. "Using the other cat's strength or speed against them!"

"Yes. There's no point in wasting your own energy when you can just use all their energy to do something like that. It's surprising how many cats fall for that kind of thing." Shademoon really enjoyed this. Training was fun! "So...the best way to do that is to overbalance them. If they're running at you quickly, you should be able to step aside and trip them. Or just step aside, because then they won't be able to stop. And if they're aiming a heavy blow at you, then you can step aside for that too. When a cat directs all it's strength at you, then it can't hold back if it misses, it will just end up hitting the ground. Remember how I told you not to follow through when deflecting blows? That's why. So...why don't we try a couple of times? Rivertail, get over here." she flicked her tail at her brother.
"Uh...why?" he got up and walked over apprehensively. He hadn't been listening to the training session, so he wasn't sure what was about to happen.
"Hit Hollypaw. Not too hard, but do it like you would in battle, with your weight behind it." she winked at Hollypaw. "Remember...just step aside. Works everytime. Now we'll see what a mousebrain he really is!"
"Heeey!" he protested, but he was glad his sister was joking around. Hollypaw probably didn't know it...but she was probably becoming Shademoon's very first friend in the Clan. Probably, as long as Shademoon stayed happy...He readied himslef, aimed for the apprentice's nose, then lurshed fowards. He had no clue what the apprentice would to, but he hoped it wouldn't hurt...
((lol I'm using all my martial arts training to do this post....I guess it works with cats too lol))

(Hey, that's awesome!! you take martial arts? =D )
Hollypaw's eyes sparkled as she tried not to laugh. Rivertail padded over to her, and when he did as Shademoon asked, she quickly sidestepped the blow, moving on her toes for faster, quicker movement.. She was enjoying every minute of this training session! She had never had so much fun before!
(awww really? Hollypaw is Shademoon's first friend besides her brother? =3 It's great how Shademoon is coming out of her shell =D)

((I don't go to classes but my uncle teaches me some stuff and I watch a lot of tutorial dvds and read books and stuff and it's not hard to make up your own stuff as well once you know all the basics...it's really fun! I mostly do tai ch'ia and judo...and some other stuff. and yes...shademoon likes hollypaw :-D yay! but she'll get a little depressed in this post...sorry))
Uh-oh. He hadn't been expecting that. Rivertail couldn't control his body, all his weight was behind it and he toppled over into an awkward somersalt. He groaned. "I've got dirt in my eye..."
Shademoon suddenly began to do that thing she didn't like doing...she began to remember. I've got dirt in my eye... She remembered saying that, back in FireClan. With her mother. She had fallen over, just like Rivertail...and that was the day before...no. She wasn't going to think about that. She wasn't...she couldn't...
Shademoon sighed. "Rivertail? Could you take over for a while...I don't feel great..." She hoped her understood the meaning behind her words. That feeling...was tearing inside her again, shredding her heart.
"Shademoon..." he sighed. "Okay. Go and sit for a while...and try to feel better, okay?" his stomach clenched with pity and pain for his sister. Her blue eyes had that dead, weak glaze, and deep inside them, he could see all that agony. "Try not to think too much." he warned her.
Try not to think too much... That was probably a good idea. She settled herself and focused on trying to make the feeling go away.
